After weighing up the pros and cons of all the HD servies on offer, i have decieded to go with Freeview HD but if i need to get a new set-top box then i would like it to have PVR function as well.

The only Freeview HD PVR's that i can find at the moment are a pair of Sagemcom (320gb &500gb) that are due for release at the end of may.

Dose anyone know any other Freevies HD PVR's that will be relased before the world cup as i realy want to watch this in all its HD glory.

Cheers

We've got a group test of Freeview HD STBs in the forthcoming July issue with models from Goodmans, Philips, Humax, Linsar, and Icecrypt. I think that PVRs are in the pipeline from all these companies, bar Linsar and perhaps Goodmans... I think there could be PVRs from Sharp and Sagem (as has already been mentioned) on the way too...

I e mailed humax at the end of last week and they told me that their freeview hd pvr was not due for release until september 2010. It will retail at approx £350. The sagem ET90 320 is available just now from comet and argos retailing at £250. Not seen any reviews anywhere though so going to wait a bit.

I was just thinking the same thing, craigy p. I'm interested in the new TVonics box (I've been using a TVonics pvr for a few years now and I love it), but I don't really understand the 'HDMI switch' thing. Does this box receive high def or not? Anyone?

I found this today.....

DTR-HD500 which includes a seemingly official Tvonics Spec sheet.

I have a Tvonics ATM and am tempted by this one. I guess tvonics are going to show off this unit at Norfolk in a couple of days.

A few more deets would be nice though. Is it dual T2 tuners (or one T2 and one T1/T2) and can it record two HD channels concurrently.

Not a huge fan of the design, but it is acceptable. I have always found my Tvonics very simple to use.

I suppose network DIVX and MKV support would be nice, but maybe I need to stick to PLEX for that.

Luckily I have 300 notes earmarked for just such a beast.

What I really want is some (any) hands on with Philips, Tvonics and Humax.

DId I see somewhere that the Humax boxes are not due till Sept?

*edit, yes, I did, erm like 3 post above this one*

Doh. Rules out the Hummy for me probably.

Have just found that the Phillips HDT8520 will go on sale from monday (17/05/2010) from Comet, Richer Sounds & John Lewis for £299. This looks like it might be the best bet at the moment, will probs wait for a week or two to see if any reviews appear.

I am suspicious of humax saying they are delaying their launch until september.I suspect it will be sooner as you would think they would want to get it out fast for the world cup. I will wait til next month before buying as what hi fi have a supertest of freeview hd pvr's. That should help with a decision. Hopefully the sagem wins as its the cheapest so far at £250!

Just read that toshiba are also launching one, Toshiba HDR5010. Dont think they have ventured into the realm of pvr's before so will be interesting to see how good it is. It is pricey though at £350.

Anyone had any luck in finding reviews for the available Freeview HD PVRs as yet (this includes the possibility of WHF doing any pre-World Cup online reviews... hint hint!).

Clearly a big reason for owning a Freeview HD PVR is going to be for the World Cup, so this rules out the Humax which was announced today unfortunately (as Humax have an excellent record with their standard Freeview and Freesat boxes).

At the moment, for High Def World Cup football it looks to be a choice between the Phillips (or Pace) HDT8520, the DigitalStream boxes (DHR8202U, DHR8203U or DHR8205U), the Sagemcom boxes (RT190-320 or RT190-500), the 3view box and maybe the Sharp TU-T2HR32.

But which one?!

professor hat, what might sway you is price. Argos are doing the sagemcom 320 gig for 199.99 just now on special, down from 249.99. 35 quid to extend the warranty to 5 years. That's a total of 235. Compare that to the humax which will be 350.If you get it from richers with a 5 yr warranty then its 385. Thats a hell of a difference. ok the humax has a bigger hard drive but the sagem is still more than adequate with more space than i will ever need. I would love some reviews though.

Well, to be honest, my main concern is picture quality and then probably functionality over price. I'm more than willing to pay £50 - £100 extra now to get a better picture and a useable interface.

Trouble is, without any reviews at all, this seems impossible to determine at the moment!

I am in the same boat, cash is in hand, but without reviews I am not buying squat.

I am very tempted by the Sagem at £199 in Argos. I think the offer runs out on the 24th May.

I remember reading early on (before product launch) , that the Humax Fox HD T2 box would allow you to connect up an external HDD, as a later upgrade for recording purposes, but have not heard anything about that since. Both Amazon and Richer Sounds are now doing the Fox at an appealing price.

Okay, for those who are interested, I've spent a while in John Lewis today where they have both the Digital Stream and Philips boxes on display. John Lewis in Kingston was where I got the demo done but they had no stock of the Philips so I then traversed London to the Oxford Street branch where they had 9 in stock (so 8 or less now).

After a little play with them both, the Digital Stream definitely had a better feel to it (except for the annoyingly slow performance of the buttons). This was mainly in terms of still being able to see the programme transparently in the background and hear the audio when in EPG mode, whereas on the Philips, you lose the programme you were watching completely and can only see the EPG. Even more annoyingly, on the Philips, you can't directly access a channel from the EPG, you can only set recordings. To access a channel, you have to exit the EPG, then either type in the number of the channel (if you know it) or press OK and then scroll to the channel you want - naturally this menu doesn't show you what's actually on. Very silly! I've read elsewhere that Philips / Pace are listening out to the complaints of the current box and will look to sort them out via firmware upgrades, so with any luck, this will be fixed sooner rather than later.

Both boxes worked well in terms of recording, I set up a couple of recordings on both (the news) and they both started and finished without cutting out any of the programme.

However, after a little effort I managed to get them to also hook both the Digital Stream and Philips boxes to the same TV so we could do a comparison of picture quality (this was after the "expert" came over to help and told me they'd look identical - yeah right!). Without question the Philips produced a sharper image on both the HD and SD channels. And that's why I came home with the Philips

Got to set it all up yet now, so will report back later on how it all looks!

Thanks for the update professorhat, my local currys sore had the Philips in stock but would not put it on any of the demo tvs, which was annoying but from the general look of the set i was very impressed.

i will be egearly awaiting to hear what its like when its fully up and running as this seams to be the best bet at the moment.

i contacted argos today re the sagem and they told me it had been discontinued and they would not be getting any more in! Bizarre as the bloody thing only went on sale about 2 weeks ago. I too will wait for reviews now.
