Would anyone recommend going for floorstanders all around (fronts and rears) with matching center and sub in a 5.1 system? I was looking at the Q Acoustics 1030 floorstanders.

Does using floorstanders for rears cause problems with sound direction, etc? or is it better to go for di-pole or tri-pole rears?

I can only say from my limited experience auditioning gear that the surround sound field sounds better when the surround speakers are higher than the fronts, so i guess using the same floor standers all round would cancel that option out unless you put them up on plinths or something like that. And that might not look that great.

If you've got the space for it then I don't really see a problem. I've read of someone on the forums who has 1050s for his fronts and 1030s for his rears and loves it. In an ideal world, you want you rears to be a little bit higher than ear level and certainly not any lower than ear level. Have a look at your seating position for watching movies and work from there.

Don't see a problem either. You may get a better result in using 7.1 with the rear surround fx speakers mounted above ear height and the rear LR from floorstanders.

i wanted to go with floorstanders for the rears as i can't wall mount them. ideally how high should the rears be in a 5.1 system?

whats the difference between normal speakers, bi-polars and tri-polars? are any of these better as rears?

Ideally above ear level when seated and angled down towards the listening position. However this isn't practical for everyone and isn't a hard and fast rule. I have my rears (Q Acoustics 1010s) on some Atacama Nexus 10 stands which I bought second hand recently. Like you, I have a problem with wallmounting but have found that the 1m tall stands give the necessary height and were a good alternative. If you look at the Q Acoustics QAV rears, they can be mounted at the bottom of a wall on the skirting board which is also quite a neat solution.

Thanks FuzzyinLondon. If the rears have to be as a minimum higher than ear-level would they be ok mounted much higher up, say 10-12ft? if so, what rears would you recommend for that purpose?
