Hi there. My Monitor Audio Silver 9i speakers do well 3 - 4 feet from the wall behind them. In my new apt. I have to locate them one foot from the wall and they get boomy. Any suggestions for floor standing speakers that do well close to the wall?

vinod_david:New KEF Q series.

Probably not.

For the floorstanders: 'All you have to do is decide which model is best for you, bearing in mind the size of the space and your personal listening preferences.'

For the standmounts: 'Whether as main speakers, music speakers for your study or family room, rear speakers in a home theatre system or general purpose speakers for multi-room set-ups, the two new Q bookshelf models open up a world of audiophile quality sound at a surprisingly affordable price.'

Also notice that the floorstanders are rear-ported, which as a general rule means close rear walls are a no-no. The older Q series floorstanders had front ports.

No ports on the new Q - just forward firing ABR. These would be a consideration but with the amount of bass they produce I would be looking to keep them out of the corners. Another option would be PMC.

Spendor A6, they have a very small, slit at the bottom on the rear but i would think they would be perfect for you.

Used: Royd Minstrels. Not ported (I think) and so small, Q Acoustics 2010s dwarf them. Okay, that last bit's a fib.

Minstrels were good, surprisingly deep bass but lively and bright - side ported. Fine against walls and smaller than they look. There are quite a few single driver floorstanders that should be able to get a good balance near a wall, I'd avoid multi-driver speakers though as few work well unless a good couple of feet out. My favourites would be Totem Arro's...

Townshend Glastonburys - Mine are stuck right into the corners. Totally inert cabinet and front ported. Stunning. Occasionally available on ebay at modest prices. I paid full retail for mine in 1989 and wouldn't change 'em for the world.

Cant go wrong with Mordaunt Short Mezzo 6s...I have them about close to a wall and they sound great having ports at the front and the back

cse:Neat Motive 2 SE. Downward firing ports and very small.

+1 for the Neat Motive 2, they're a small cabinet, and when I demoed them were very close to the wall.

Just as an aside - I wouldn't recommend putting any speaker flat against the wall unless it's designed to be there specifically. We've been working on a "micro" speaker, about 22cm tall x 13cm wide and backed right up to the wall you can get a solid, powerful sound but you lose all air, space and depth - 6" into the room and everything opens right up. You'll find pretty much the same thing happens with most speakers, even if designed with wall reinforcement in mind it definitely helps to give them a little breathing room.
