Flat screen plus sub?

The red light on my Philips CRT has started blinking, so it's landfill before too long.

I shortlisted LCDs from Philips, Samsung and Sony, but only the Sony has a variable volume output.

I want a miniumum of boxes, so no surround sound, but thought that adding a sub would help fill out the sound from the TV. So it's the Sony then.

Is this a daft idea? I've never read a test assessing a TV's internal speakers beefed up with a sub.

Answers in a text box please.

So with what are you going to feed the sub? Surely the TV audio outs will only offer left and right (Stereo), and these will need to fed to an amp, and then speakers. so much for miminum boxes. I must admit I don`t understand when you say only the Sony has variable volume.

Admittedly most TV's are poor when it comes to audio but it depends on your expectations. You can't plug speakers or sub directly into a TV. Have you considered a soundbar? They still need a sub and you have to be sat in the sweetspot (90 degrees to the screen) and are only really suited to square/rectangular rooms where the TV isn't in a corner IMHO. Alternatively a basic AV Receivers and a pair of bookshelf speakers plus sub would suit. It depends on what you want and what your budget is.

The Sony TV set has a stereo audio out with level controlled by the set's own volume control which you can use to feed an active sub - adjusting the gain on the sub to integrate with the speakers on the set.
