Hmmm, I see your point as the original cut IS the superior film but my vote would go to The Empire Stikes Back. I just prefer the darher tone of the film.
...........i kind of agree in many ways a better film, but because it was 2nd in line it didnt have the impact that the first did on me............oh and its good to note that when star wars was made although a studio film-george lucas wasnt really 'hollywood' at the time...
Very good point. We often forget that Lucas was once anti establishment - I can't bring myself to watch any of the newer Star Wars films.

i have watched them and have them on DVD but although the SFX etc has come on in leaps and bounds, there is just something missing....most of the time, there are parts that have that wow factor included....

I personally found the special effects less convincing than those set out in Empire Strikes Back. The over reliance of CGI lends the film a cartoon quality that I do not like. Personally I feel that CGI only really works when used in conjunctions with models. Jurassic Park had far more convincing special effects as it used CGI in conjunction with models, despite being several years earlier than the new SW films.
They should've CGI-ed Anakin in, he's alot less realistic in those movies than Jar Jar Binks. And that is saying something
Yeah the Star Wars Pre-quils do show just how not to act when shooting a movie using Blue-screen techniques and talking to imaginary people.

I disagree slightly, I think it was just appalling casting. In my opinion Ian McDiarmid is particularly good, it's just Hayden Christensen appears to be the new Keanu Reeves in the wooden stakes, and a good actress like Natalie Portman is both criminally underused and given some rubbish lines to try and eek out something worthwhile out of.

I used to like this but cannot get past the "how did he get the poster back on the wall" mystery!

A poor scene in what would have been a flawless film.

Other faves of mine mentioned here:

Aliens (directors cut)
Leon (directors cut)
Jaws

I agree, I dont rate Hayden Christensen at all and some of the dialogue was appauling. I have always been a big star wars fan, and even flew out to New York to see The Phantom Menace before its UK release. I do like all six films but understand why the new ones are not popular.

I've wondered that myself, but I think you could forgive such a great film that one error.

Really interesting opinions here. I can't pick just one.

The Godfather - perfection
Naked - Thewlis' performance is the greatest tour de force of all time
Amelie - pure joyous cinema
Pulp Fiction - cool lines, great soundtrack
Edward Scissorhands - Burton at his best.

Downfall - covers the last days of Hitler and his regime in the Berlin bunker. Sounds and looks so authentic in German with subtitles.

In my opinion the best film I have ever seen is the uncut version of 'Oldboy'-what a story, my second would be 'City of God'.
