Favourite albums of the last 4 decades

Page 2 - Seeking answers? Join the What HiFi community: the world's leading independent guide to buying and owning hi-fi and home entertainment products.
Impossible to name just one album per decade:

In no particular order: (1970s) Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True; Minnie Riperton - Perfect Angel; David Bowie - Hunky Dory.

(1980s) The Jam - Sound Affects; Squeeze - East Side Story.

(1990s) Nirvana - Unplugged in New York; Crowded House - Woodface

(2000s) Amy Winehouse - Back to Black; Beverley Knight - Music City Soul.

Come tomorrow this could be all nonsense. At the mo the above list.

70's Queen, Night at the Opera, Joni Mitchell, Ladies of the Canyon, James Taylor, Sweet baby James

80's Luther Van Dross, Forever, for always, for love. Sting, Nothing like the sun. Peter Gabriel, So.

90's Everything but the girl, Idlewild. Beth Nielsen Chapman, Sand and water. Alison Krauss, So long, so wrong.

70s, too many to choose from: Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, Doors, Steely Dan, THe Who, Little Feat, Santana, Bob Marley, Dylan etc. I will pick:

Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks.

80s a drought for me, Bruce's The River is worth a mention but I will go for:

The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane.

90s a bit better:

Can't really choose between these 2:

Altan - Harvest Storm and Beth Orton - Central Reservation

00s Not many I like; Top 3 are:

Ray Lamontagne: Trouble

Calexico - Carried to Dust

Shelby Lynne - Just A Little Lovin'

Based on what I listened to most of the time, at the time, and shaped or reflected my state of mind at the time…not that obscure but here goes...

1970’s Blue by Joni Mitchell but if I’m honest more like Regatta de Blanc by The Police

1980’s A Walk Across the Rooftops by The Blue Nile

1990’s OK Computer by Radiohead

2000’s The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow

2010’s Still a developing list but listening a lot to Ellie Goulding, Gotye and Peter Gabriel (New Blood) & the Passenger new album…

'70s/ Dire Straits-Dire Straits

'80s/ The Cure - Disintegration

'90s/ Stereophonics - Performance and Cocktails (just in the '90s)

'00s/ Coldplay - Parachutes (just in the '00s)

'10s/ Passenger - All the little Lights / Orbital - Wonky

Those are not possibly the best albums of those decades but probably my favourite/most played.

70s - Genesis. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. So difficult to choose from this decade, comprises most of my collection.

80s - DiMeola/McLaughlin/de Lucia. Friday Night In San Francisco

90s - Tori Amos - which one? very hard,. Boys for Pele this week.

00s - Return To Forever. Returns.

10s- Return To Forever. The Mothership Returns. Easy, so little to choose from.

No Waits, Hammill, VDGG,Yes. Joni, Camel, Tull or Paul Simon - so tricky just choosing one.

So what are your favourite albums of the 70s through to the end of the noughties? I'm excluding classical because they're timeless.

Nice thread, very difficult. Shame 60s not included. 60s and 70s are easy, there are just so many - the most interesting, diverse and exciting musically IMO! You imply non-classical is not timeless. I kind of disagree - Everyone has heard of Jimi Hendrix for example and that was 45 years ago - I think people will still be listening to bands such as this in 200+ years.

70s - (Santana - Abraxas), (Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypses), (Fleetwood Mac - Boston Blues), (Neil Young - Zuma)

80s - (U2- Under and Blood Red Sky), (Paul Simon- Graceland), (Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms)

90s-(Ali Farka Toure/Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu)

00s-(Coldplay - Parachutes), (The Black Keys-Thickfreakness), (The White Stripes), (Radiohead - Ok Computer)
