Extra warranty by using credit cards to buy?

I'm aware that in the US if you buy big screen TV's etc with your credit card you automatically gain an extra years warranty provided by your credit card company. Is the same true over here??

We wish! But no. You have extra security if the firm goes bust or the goods never turn up... But no extra warranty.

Thought someone put a post on here a few weeks back saying that they'd been told by Trading Standards that anything bought online or in a shop over £100 was automatically covered by a 5 year guarantee? That seems unlikely as presumably we'd all know about it; but wouldn't be the first time the majority of the public were ignorant of something that's actually known by those who know.

Depends on whether or not your card provider offers the cover, I think my Shell Mastercard (Citi) offers the 1 year cover on electrical goods.

Some cards offer warranty cover as a benefit, but it's not compulsory in the way you mention it applying in the States.

As for the 'automatic' 5 year warranty thing, I'm pretty sure it's incorrect. I can't find find anything to support the idea. You do have legal rights (for several years) under the Sale of Goods Act, but that's a quite different thing, as I rambled on about in that thread
