That's filmed in 4k, and 'optimised' for 4k, but it's not actually a 4k BluRay. It will only be 1080p resolution.

Another unfortunate example of 4k marketing hype.

I think the new Hobbit Blu-Ray is in 4K but not sure if it is the real thing.

Why did it need a director?

Someone has to decide where to point the camera (presumably always at the fireplace), which fireplaces to film, and shot duration (I'm guessing an array of fireplaces is showcased, from heritage examples to modern abstract designs). We may also be treated to a mix of fuel types. There's wood, coal, and other flammable materials. I don't have expertise in this area. In any case, these things don't film themselves!

The language given is English. (Do fireplaces talk? Are there subtitles?)

There may be voiceover and commentary tracks.

No.

I meant blu-ray players but as far as 4K blu-ray discs are concerned, i think this is the start of things to come this year inc. blu-ray players, so i will be keen to know what the electronics giants bring out this year, i'll be watching with interest.

Well, there were no 4K BDPs showcased at CES this year; though there are reports that 4K BDPs are in the pipeline. We'll have to see what develops.

As for mastered in 4K BDs, as mentioned above, these have nothing to do with native 4K content delivery. I'd be surprised if we see true 4K-capable BDPs and BD releases this year.

We shall see, if their is nothing at the beginning of the year, i wouldn't be surprised if their is something at the end of this year.

I'm sure the titles will be "Alaska", "Story of the Wolf", "Story of the Bison", "Story of the Pigeon" and all of that BS.

This has probably been asked already, but with no discs and no players, why would you want a 4k telly?

Which has always been my argument.

Even the disc format has yet to be decided so how on earth people think there will be players and discs released this year is beyond me. We are at the very start of 4K and it's far to early to speculate about discs and players, this could turn out to be the next thing that dies a death after all.

This year should see developments but I seriously doubt there will be anything other than a few TV ranges to test the market and the planned Netflix service which to me doesn't justify the outlay on a 1st generation 4K TV...content is king and you would still be watching very little native content.

Which is fine but there is still no fixed guidelines for the format as I said before, I'm not against 4K that should be made clear but until it's a finalised format I'm just not interested I'm afraid. The existence of a disc format and TVs to support it in no way means it will be a success and that consumer demand is there for the format, as I said earlier it's very early days for 4K so let's just see how it all develops over the next year or two.

The prospect of a 4K OLED TV that has a lot of native content is the only thing that would tempt me to upgrade and at this moment in time that seems a long way off.
