I have decided to buy components I have been interested in through ebay and sell them on if there not what I expected in hope to find the sound I am looking for.

I picked up a Marantz CD63 ki yesterday but this may need the laser lens replaced although I am still impressed by how neutral it sounds. I have also just bought the NAD C326BEE. Other kit I may decide to try is the Rotel RCD-965BX, Sony CD930, Marantz PM7200, Marantz PM6004 and of course compare it to my current setup. I have just had the Tacima mains conditioner delivered and all of this will be used with Chord Carnival Silver speaker cable into Monitor Audio BX2's sitting on soundstyle Z1 stands.

Are there any other CD players or amps that I could be looking at? I am after a neutral to warm sound and would like conventional sized components if possible. My budget is £150 - £200 per item.

Thanks

Mo

If the Cd 63i sounds fine and reads your discs fine just keep using it and run it into the ground. I see CD readers as semi-consumable items that need replacing every few years.

For amps you could also try one of the older amps from towards the top end of a Japanese manufacturers range. One from the Sony ES range, or Onkyo Integra, Pioneer A range, Sansui Au range, Kenwood or Trio KD range or something like a Marantz PM4. Whatever comes along that looks like a good deal with a good chance of you selling it for more than what you paid for it.

I'd also be looking to try different speakers, but only because I hate tiny 2 way ported speakers. You might like this type of speaker more than me due to us having different priorities when it comes to size and looks.

Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun trying different kit...

Thanks for the replies, could you sugggest any of the Sony models? I would have considered changing speakers but seeing as I have just switched from floorstanders to bookshelfs I would like to stick with these for a while. Also I know the speakers I have work well in the room there being used in. I also have a BK xls200 subwoofer which I can use to underpin these if need be. GSB thanks for offering

Thanks again GSB, I never used to but second hand electronics until I was after some gear which hadnt been produced in years so I had no option but to look for used units. I have at times bought items from ebay where they have been misadvertised but in general I have been lucky.

I picked up a used NAD C326BEE from ebay delivered for £155 which is half of what a new unit currently retails for. And the best part about it is the used unit is absolutley spotless so it was a worthwhile gamble.

I was considering a SACD player, maybe an older Sony or possibly a Marantz (CD7001) but I dont own any SACD's so I have left that for now.

You could try to find an Arcam CD72T or the newer 73T. I had a 72T for years (currently residing in its box in my loft) and think it's a great player.

Thevintageknob is a good starting point for information on classic Japanese hi-fi equipment including Sony ES amplifiers.
