Help!

My wife and I have just enjoyed Twin Peaks Season one, in splendid picture and 5.1 sound. We played the R2 dvd's on the kit listed below using the PS3 (PS3 to Onkyo via hdmi, then to TV with hdmi from Onkyo). Everything was great...

Popped in series two, and as it is R1 the PS3 refused the disc! Cue grabbing the old Panasonic multi region dvd player which had been gathering dust.

PROBLEM: the dvd player has a scart out, an S video out, and an optical or co-ax for sound. It has no hdmi as it is a bit old! I hooked the thing up to the TV direct with a decent scart, but could not figure out how to get the sound via the Onkyo. I tried using an optical cable, with no success, as all i could get was sound/vision direct via the scart. The sound was hopeless.. The picture was awful, too. I stuck in a disc from Season one which was awful too, confirming it wasn't the quality of the dvd itself (and showing the huge difference playing the discs with the PS3 makes).

QUESTION: how do I manage to get my Onkyo to help me? Can I use it for sound, and picture direct to tv with scart? Any other way I am missing? The difference is amazing... it is so bad I just have to figure something out!!! Surely I can use the dvd/Onk together somehow?!

Thanks for any help folks

Not sure why you're having a problem with the optical. Have you gone into the setup menu to assign the input to DVD? If you haven't then do that and consult the manual if you are having problems finding the right menu. Then select DVD on the receiver when you come out of the setup menu and turn the sound down on the TV. Make sure optical output is enabled, if it needs to be, on your dvd player and set it to bitstream output if there is a menu to give you the choice between that and LPCM. Now you should get sound.

I did that... not working. Onkyo knows to use the optical, but wont?!

Wonder if the dvd settings are to blame?

Can I feed my dvd picture into the Onkyo in any way???

Yes. You can try using the S-video out or use a scart to composite adaptor. Either should give you a picture but it might not be as good as RGB Scart straight into the back of the tv. Also, have you tried going down the co-axial route for the sound?
