DVD player

Hi, probably asked many times before, anyway...

Since I have a sizable DVD collection and still want to get the best out of them would it still be worth considering the Toshiba XD-E500?

Assume I get the XDE:

1. Does it perform, as some say, better at 720p through a HD ready set? (I'm aware the XDE enhancements will be off at this setting). And does one also set the telly at 720p?

2. Or will it perform equally well at 1080p through a full HD set? This will also obviously allow me to use a blu-ray player later to full effect.

3. Are the latest budget players like the Sony BDP-S360 / Panasonic BD-60 equally good at DVD playback?

All opinions welcome, thanks.

I bought the Toshiba XDE-500 multi-region dvd player for £59.99 and have to say it's much better at upscaling than my PS3 and i can play all my imports. But if your in the market for a blu-ray player as well and don,t have a PS3 than i would go for one of them. The reason i got one was really for a gap filler until the right machine came along for me and film prices dropped. So this way i can get the best out of my dvd's now and upgrade later, moving the Toshiba dvd player to another room when i purchase that special player.

lobby - thanks for the reply, just a few questions:

Do you have a full HD telly? And so you're upscaling the XD to 1080p? If the pic is great at this level then at least I can get a full HD telly if not a blu-ray player right now.

Yes Manicm iv'e got a Samsung LE40F86 full hd Lcd and find after trying many upscaling budget players from Samsung, i seem to get a slightly washed out picture, but when using the Toshiba it's bright vibrant colours and much better detail, even better than my PS3 which had an update for upscaling films so for me this is a winner. I have to say the Onkyo 406 would of been my first choice, but as i have now room on my shelf i had to place the player on the floor under my glass stand, and there was only enough room for the Toshiba Heigh is only 42mm. Hope you find what your after soon and audtion your tv if you can.
