WHF have done an article here on it:

https://www.whathifi.com/advice/dtsx-what-it-how-can-you-get-it

I always thought you needed more speakers for that than the traditional 5.1 setup. Are any of the other new soundtracks still good for a 5.1 setup? Just reading the article in more detail the DTS virtual X is supported too.

as a quick read through shows one paragraph saying a 5.1 setup is ok then the next one saying a 11.2 is preferable.

here's another article, older but better written on what DTS-X is and the proper speaker layout.

You can't change Physics. There are 5 speakers, how will it create an immersive experience of an 11-speaker setup?

Just as a test I played Independence Day UHD DTS-X on my Oppo 203 through my Anthem 520 and the Anthem displays "DTS-HD Master Audio 3/4" i.e. 7 channels despite my 5.1 setup and the AVR's max spec of 5.1. That bit is fact. This bit might well be my imagination but it does sound different.

Wow, cool. I like your system too - very nice. How do you think the Anthem would sound with B&W speakers?

Soz but can't help you with your question on B&W speakers 'cos not had any experience with them. Sure someone will comment.

Unless they include Atmos or DTS:X soundtracks, most if not all BD sources are supplied in 7.1 format. Your AVR then "upscales" the sound according to how many speakers you have. For example if the Starship Enterprise rumbles its way from front left to back right the the AVR sends that sounds to the front left and back right speakers, making use of the side ones as they exist.

Atmos, not sure about DTS:X is supposed to be "object orientated" so the soundtrack tells the AVR something like "the Starship Enterprise is now moving from front left to back right and it sounds like this - now go sort it out". The AVR then "sorts it out" according to however many speakers it has. Really clever stuff and I have eff all idea how it does it :)

So question answered and it’s quite interesting.

Test completed using an a3060 and 5.1 speaker setup.

If Dolby Surround is set to on, on the receiver the DTS-MA sound track is used, but if THROUGH or Neural:X is seleected then the DTS:X track is used.

Last time I watched it I had Dolby surround set to on so I guess I missed the DTS:X. I’ll have to watch it again :)

^ its all a bit much really, isn't it?

I mean, back in the days of VHS you just stuck the tape in and away you went.

With all these competing sound formats encoded on each disc, its getting to the point where you'll spend more time setting up the AVR than you do watching the blinking movie!

Room for improvement manufacturers? Let the owner set a "preferred" and perhaps second format choice and be done with?

Well I do listen to music on my 2 channel setup, where it just sounds like a wall of music. But when I play the same in DTS neural mode in the HT room, the effect is one of all round envelopment. The effect is very pronounced . And I absolutely cannot make out the source of the sound from any speakers. I was raving about it in the hifi section a few months back. Why settle with 2 speakers and spend tons on amplification trying to get a sound stage and depth out of them, when DTS can do it on the swtich of a button.

And recently I read a review where a gentleman had auditioned music in 2.2 channel setup, with 2 over head Atmos speakers. And he was blown away by the immersion that comes with it.

So folks with over head speakers , please give it a try. The centre channel will be most important in this mode in my experience. As the vocals are centred on this channel. And the rest of the track coming at you from all directions including overhead....freaky cool :)

Yes I know what you mean. Coincidentally looking into the above has made me start experimenting with Neural: X vs Dolby Surround DSP’s. Both have their advantages and it feels like some content sounds better on Neural:X and some better on Dolby Surround. It’s a pain as the perfectionist in me is now switching between the two (at great frustration to my wife :) ) trying to find the ‘best’ one for what I’m watching :)

I’m getting on my own nerves with it if I’m honest :-|

Yes both DTS and Dolby DSP’s are pretty awesome. They can fill space without loosing fidelity:). Love it :)
