Not sure if this is the correct forum/section for posting this, but here goes. I have a small puzzler on my hands and wonder if anyone could have come across this before/give me their opinion.
Basically my TT is in for a service and upgrade. My hard working (there's a lot to do!) hi-fi engineer guy has almost finished now and is putting the deck back together, but has hit a snag. See here:
"Deck is all but finished. Last problem, the cartridge headshell holes don’t line up with the geometry of the deck. This is common when there are two different cartridge mounting areas. I can only assume that you have been using this like this for a few years! The sound would be less than best!
I have attached a picture to show you.
I will need to drill two holes in the headshell to take the cartridge in the forward position."
Someone else did mention re a problem aligning the cart properly (when I had the cart originally fitted to the deck). I think they got around this by adjusting the position of the armboard or something? If this is what actually happened, then that might account for the fact that, after the deck's return, the arm didn't properly fit inside the trough (it's a Townshend deck) when it was in the closed position (i.e. the paddle rubbed against the trough wall when playing the first track on records, so that the tough always had to be left partly open when playing records), indicating that the arm/deck (both original/unmodded Townshend) wasn't designed to be used with cartridges such as the Shelter I have? Perhaps the Shelter has a longer body than most? I thing my hi-fi techie guy is trying to say: "this is common when there AREN'T two different cartridge mounting areas". I guess the mod suggested to me would be creating the 2nd cartridge mounting area and it will then be possible to fully close the trough?
Anyway, hope there might be a few peeps who know Townshend out there!
