Hi folks,purchesed dbpoweramp today,downloaded ok,ripped a few disks...no worries.All albums ripped to flak,all stored in my music,complete with data

I have windows 7 on my laptop...(.wirless) it has conected to my avr....but when i try to open music via the avr, nothing is in the files, again when i open in windows it says it cant play files?!

Internet search suggested that i need a flak pluggin or something to play via windows.

So if anyone could shed some light,or offer assistance this newbie would appreciate it greatly:)

Have you got media sharing turned on in WMP?

"If media sharing is not already turned on, you need to turn it on by doing the following:

Click the arrow below the Library tab, and then click Media Sharing.

In the Media Sharing dialog box, select the Share my media check box."

Yep, Windows Media Player and FLAC is always going to be an uphill battle. You should go for a UPnP server like MediaMonkey (which also rips), Twonky or Asset UPnP

I've just paid for dbpoweramp so not looking to use anything else to rip.Could someone explain the next step please...would a media manager such as helium do the trick?(cant get my head round mmonkey)

Not bothered if windows doesn't play my music as i want to play it via the avr, guess i'll need more kit for that?

cheers

The UPnP (Universal Plug 'n' Play) server software is what makes the music on your PC 'visible' to – and thus playable by – external devices such as your AVR. In other words, they form the bridge between computer and receiver, if you like by searching for and indexing the music files on the PC in a form the AVR will recognise.

MediaMonkey and Tversity are free UPnP servers – for many others you have to pay.

Great,i understand now,thanks again Andrew:)

In your opinion would it be advisable to install a paid for version,as your link earlier suggested no free download,or just use media monkey for free?I want to get this right as it is very frustrating when one doesn't realy know what one is doing :?

Sorry to rain on your parade, but my experience with UPnP for music to Sony Bravia TV and BluRay player is that it's a right, royal pain. The user-experience compared with a music-orientated player like Sonos or Squeezebox is chalk'n'cheese.

FWIW, I get the impression that the vendors do their testing with Windows Media Player and Twonky.

Media Monkey would be fine, and TVersity is, of course, only almost free – a licence for the basic version will cost you $3.99.

Just about every NAS will come with its own UPnP software installation already in place – although the various software used can be of variable quality, as I explained in this blog piece of just over a year ago.

However, in theory all you have to do when you have a NAS is transfer your content to it, and then point your AVR's media player to the NAS rather than the PC.

>What do i need to do?<

You likely now need to switch off Windows MEdia Player sharing so you're not offering two UPnP shares to the network. Maybe need to set your firewall to allow the MediaMonkey to receive incoming or temporaril switch off the f/w. Then reboot the PC for sure.

Hi GSB if you change your mind . (this way you wont lose anything)

how to partition using win7

1. left click start and then right click computer.

2. left click manage

3.go to disk management

4. right click hdd you want to partion and select shrink volume

5. select the size in mb you want to allocate (1024mb to a gb)

6 partion will be created then right click partion that says unallocated and select new simple volume

7. follow the wizard prompts keep the size the same and assign drive letter.

8.format partion where it says file system select fat32 leave allocation unit size as default

9. volume label change to anything you want e.g music.

10. make sure perform quick format is selected(just below voluume label) and select next then finnish.

11. transfer music across and you are done

you will still need to use media monkey or similar hope this helps.

all the best, Daryl
