I've recently bought my first blu-ray player (I know - I'm always a late adapter!) a Sony BDP-S370 it is connected to my TV by HDMI and to my Arcam AVR350 by coaxial digital cable.

Now I've only a few discs so far and I bought Casino Royale during the week which only contains a Dolby True HD soundtrack. However it is only playing as stereo through my amp. I borrowed a friends copy of Watchmen and again stereo only but this time badly out of sync as well.

I knew going in that I wouldn't get the full HD sound through my amp but thought it would at least play in 5.1. Other discs I have that are in DTS Master Audio play as 5.1 - anything I can do with Dolby True HD?

thanks

You cant use HDMI for audio/video with an Arcam AVR350. It has HDMI in/outputs but they act purely as a switch/allow passthrough.

The OP would have been better off going for a BDP with multi-channel analogue outs.

And conventional S/PDIF digital - optical or electrical - doesn't have the bandwidth to carry DTS-HD or Dolby Digital HD, so what you get is a mandatory lesser format on discs, to ensure back compatibility.

It's only required that the discs support one of three audio formats: standard (ie non-HD) Dolby Digital, (non-HD) DTS or linear PCM. There's no requirement for the mandatory audio track to carry surround.
