Does Philips 9664 need surround system?

Hi, I've narrowed my choice of tv down to either a Philips 42PFL9664 or a Sony KDL40HX703. I'll really be pushing my budget to go for the 9664 but it looks like a very good set. I've listened to one in a shop and its own built-in speakers do sound good, however my son tells me I should also get a surround system. What recommendations does anyone have of a budget surround system to go with the 9664? Or should I go for the cheaper Sony and be able to afford a slightly better surround set-up? Would a combination such as Yamaha NSP280's and a Sony STRDH800 be any good?

TV speakers can only do so much. A proper surround system will sound sensational. That Sony amp is fine.
