upgrading my system.do i need to buy an upscaling amp? i want to watch sd through skyhd and hd ready tv now i understand that both will upscale sd pictures so why do i need an upscaling amp?
It might be worth it if the upscaling chip in your TV isn't very good. The Sky HD one is known to be pretty bad, so if your TV doesn't have a very good upscaler, then an amp with a better one would be worth it as you'd get a better picture. So depends on what equipment you have, and what you're looking at getting.
Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much on the upscaler at that price. Just go with the amp / receiver which comes with the best sound. Your Panasonic will do a pretty good job with the upscaling on the Sky and your BD55 will do a great job upscaling DVDs.
Upscaling does improve your picture, and if you use a Pana55 that would do the trick, BUT what about sound, you going to watch everything including films on the speakers of your television? That would be a waste of time, look around buy a could upscaling amp with all the new sound codecs, and a set of decent speakers, wipes the floor with the speakers on a television.
sjared10:what would i have to spend to get the benefit?do you have any suggestions?
Not sure in all honesty, I know the Onkyo 875 / 905s have a great upscaling chip in them, but I've no idea how it compares with the Panasonic TV. I would have thought the BD55 would be better at upscaling DVDs though.
As Steve says, sound is really the most important part of an AV receiver - it is what it was primarily designed for after all. My opinion is, go for the best sound you can get for your money. If that so happens to have a good upscaler in, great, but I wouldn't make it my primary concern.
