An balanced system in effect cancels out interference in the signal resulting in a quiter background and increased clarity of the audio signal (improves on the screening of normal RCA unbalanced cables). However the source needs to be balanced also for you to have a balanced system otherwise the system will still be unbalanced. Thus balanced cables carrying the signal from CDP-preamp, and balanced cables carrying the signal from pre - power will give you a balanced system. With this type of configuration the signal will be able to travel longer distances without sound getting worse through 'noise', hum or distortion - So if you have your power amp far from your CDP and pre it won't matter.
