I have just built a pair of Wilmslow Pheonix Speakers. I am really pleased with the sound and finish. They sound great bi-amped with a Cyrus 8XPdQX and an 8 Power.

Also really like your Cyrus setup / stand etc. It would be great to hear a bit more about building the speakers and any subjective comparison on the sound compared with previous speakers.

Lovely living space too, very classy.

Wow - love how immaculate and tidy everything looks - it can be difficult to balance great home cinema/hi-fi and keep the room looking comfortable and inviting. On top of that I bet it sounds brilliant

Superb job mate!

I too would love to see a post on how you found building the speakers and how they sound...

About £750 for the speakers and £120 for the stands......I will post more about the build later.

Nice build! Did you have to make the crossover circuit from components or was it ready made?

If you take a look at my useful threads, you'll see someone else who had a go at making speakers but didn't actually manage to finish....or at least didn't finish the thread.

The cross overs were ready made - although I quite fancy a go at making the cross overs next time (I've only had them finished for a couple of weeks and I am already talking about next time!!)

Yes very nice Crossie, i keep coming back to look at these speakers (very Avalon'esc) and the Wilmslow site has some other nice self build's.
I also like that you can bye just the cabinet's and do the rest yourself, very interesting.

Out of interest did you audition the Phoenix before you bought....

I wanted a project for Christmas so just bought them blind (deaf?). I am so impressed that I have sold my Spendor A5's as the Pheonix are more detailed, sensitive 90dB and are capable of bi-wiring. The actual build is relatively simple if you have Wilmslow cut the wood for the cabinets and have them veneered. It is worth spending a lot of time finishing the cabinets to get a furniture like finish. Assembly is straight forward if you have a modicum of hand skills and patience:

  • stick sound deadening panels to the inside of the cabinet walls
  • screw crossovers to the back walls of cabinets after soldering cables to crossovers
  • glue cabinets together
  • sand, wax, varnish and oil the cabinets to your hearts content.
  • solder cables to drivers
  • glue bass reflex port and grille mounts to front
  • pack cabinets with wadding
  • screw speaker drivers and cable conectors to the cabinets
  • stretch grille cloth over frames and glue or staple into place (this is by far the most difficult part)

that's it.

Takes a long weekend to do. Afterwards, order a pair of RC60 custom deluxe stands to your required height. Ask for the stands to be unfinished so that you can finish them with the same wax, varnish or oil that you used for the cabinets.

Let them run in and enjoy! I am listening to them with a huge sense of self satisfaction and planning my next build.
