Hi all! My amp says discrete output circuit configuration on the front. Does anyone know what that actually means? What are the benefits of this if any?

It's something of a buzz phrase used by TEAC (D.O.C.C).

They explain it as follows...

"Discrete Amplifiers For High Fidelity Audio Performance
The AG-D500’s discrete amplifying circuits on each channel work to maximize the frequency range of your audio content for exceptionally natural and realistic performance. Designed to handle high current, the circuits respond instantly and effortlessly to the rapid dynamic changes common to movie soundtracks. Each circuit features a separate link to the power supply in a closed-loop design, which effectively reduces interference, while discrete transistors at the output stage run cool and cut distortion for deep, pure sound at any volume."

It's not exclusive to TEAC though. Many hi-fi companies boast about the use of discrete components or discrete circuits. Discrete just means seperate. (As opposed to everything being on the same circuit board and/or chip.)

Discrete circuits are ones that are comprised of individual components on a circuit board rather than using plug in integrated circuits or IC's .

Discrete circuits are common in older equipment before the invention of IC's but are still used in more expensive or higher end equipment so that the designer can have more control of the fine detail in the circuit he is designing .

The other advantage is that discrete circuits can withstand much higher currents and power output .

The downside of discrete circuits from a manufacturers point of view is the extra cost in time and labour which is why discrete circuits are now usually found in more expensive higher power equipment .

TBH I dont know why the manufacturer is makeing a point about this, its being ginmmicky, almost all amps , even in cheap pocket radios and ghettoblasters use individual transisters on the ouput stage of the circuit, although some still use IC's

Now if they wanted to make a point they should replace the IC's in the preamp stage as well, but I doubt they have done this to save costs, Marantz replaced the IC's in the pre amp of the PM6003 with individual transistors and now we have the improved 6004,
