Devialet vs Bryston what to expect?

Hi All,

Due to an impending new addition to the gazzip household (Mrs gazzip is due in January) it is with sadness that my system has got to be significantly revised. Currently I am considering Devialet 800 and Fact 12's to replace the Audio Research Ref5SE, the big Brystons and the BB5SE's.

Any thoughts on what to expect? The Fact 12's I have auditioned at length and I know I like them a lot but I don't know much about the Devialet setup. Anybody out there compared Devialet with Bryston?

I have'nt heard both The Fact12 and Dev 800. . but Ive heard the Fact8 and Dev.200 in a separate system. Fact 8 one ofthe cleanest Ive heard but a little too thin.. and the Dev. same and less fluidity and "emotion" If you know what I mean.

The Devialet sound is very difficult to describe without turning to clichés. In fact clichés simply won't do anyway.

There is a reason why Devialet have caused such a stir in the industry.

I can only recommend that you hear one for yourself (preferably with your speakers and with SAM on) and don't buy anything without doing so.

Agreed.

I've not heard Bryston amps: I imagine they're very clean and transparent. The Devialet with SAM brings something altogether new to the party. I've heard the D200 with Fact 8s: lots of very clean power. I should imagine the D800/Fact 12 combo would be another level entirely.

I seem to remember that Jaxwired, latterly of this parish, was running D800/Fact 12s the last time he was on here.

IME. power is not thats all about..Gazzip, you might also want to try Jadis pre(valve amp) and monos with Sonus Fabers.

The only time I've experienced valve kit in my own system was a Lampizator Level 7 DAC/preamp and a Jadis valve power amp (not sure which model) driving my Martin Logans. It sounded completely wrong: like the music had loads of horrid vibrato added. It was a relief to get back to my 500WPC Sanders Magtech: nothing added, nothing taken away.

P.S. not wanting to say valve amps can't be great: just that in my experience and my system, power is where it's at.

valve amp(s) with Martin logan speakers is a no..no for me.

Agreed, but for some reason there are lots of people who seem convinced that valves plus electrostatics is a match made in heaven. *unknw*

I think a lot depends on which electrostatics ;-)

OK, let me rephrase: there are lots of people (including the guy whose valve kit I tried at home) who are convinced that valves plus Martin Logans are a match made in heaven. *unknw*

My change from BB5SE's and 28BBST2's and a valve pre is all driven by the need to seriously downsize, and I can't think of a better solution the the Dev 800 & Fact 12 combo. I suspect that I am almost certainly going to take a hit in SQ by doing this. I am really going to miss the effortlessness of my current system but in the grand scheme of things I would rather have another child than a big hifi. Sorry guys but that's how I feel!

The reason I am going for power is that it leaves me open to easily upgrade again when the time comes. PMC Fact 12's, which are sublime to my ears, will I am sure be given a bigger brother next year which I will certsainly be looking at.

Dunno why you seem to have such a downer on the Devialets. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I hope so too! Not on a downer about the Devs at all. Just coming to terms with losing one much loved baby to accommodate another!
