I've just auditioned the new Denon micro system with a pair of Tannoy Mercury F1s. The sound was a bit thin, I thought. How do the Tannoy's compare with the Denon packaged speakers (CS-M37)? What would be a better alternative (upgrade?) for speakers?

Hi, well ive just bought the denon and was thinking of the tannoy f1 but got a brand new pair of mission m31i of ebay for £85 and the system sounds stunning, and carnt see them sounding that much different to the tannoys so just wongering how you have got the settings on the amp, also the tannoys are way better than the denon speakers.

The Tannoys are in a different league to the Denon speakers and are, IMO, by far the best speakers in their price point. It might be worth you also auditioning the Onkyo CS525 with the Tannoys. Its a belting little system. The Teac Reference 300MkIII CD player and amp also make an excellent (and fuller, warmer sounding) partnership with the F1s.

If you wanted a warmer sounding speaker with the Denon, try the Cambridge Audio S30s. Just don't position them in corners because they can get boomy. Excellent speakers though.
