is this any good? ive read some reviews online that osuggests its a very good model, but I'd like your expert opinions. I know it does usb but i'm not interested in that. more so on whether it delivers in terms of audio quality? I cant afford to spend a lot and this in pretty reasonable

I haven't actually heard the Denon, so please take my comments with the caution they ought to be given, but unless the USB is essential to you, I'd be surprised if you wouldn't get better performance from something like a Project Essential or Genie at roughly the same cost.

My thinking on this is the automatic operation (lots of cogs/levers to add friction to the arm's movement) and the length of the arm. It looks rather short, rather like some DJ turntables. This will result in distortion at the start and end of a record, although it will probably sound ok when in the middle of each side.

I would see if you can get to a dealer to have a listen for yourself, to avoid any disappointment.

thanks for the reply, I did read empire's review of the pro-ject however my only problem is that they are all missing a cover, so concerned about dust build up etc. In fact a lot of the turntables don't have covers anymore? Perhaps because there are now less home consumers and the turntables are made more for DJ'ing?

Do you specifically want USB capability?

If so, there are way better solutions that don't cost a fortune.(And have lids.)

1) Rega P1 (£199 and includes factory fitted and aligned Ortofon cartridge) + NAD PP3 USB phono stage for just over £80.

2) Project Debut III USB (also includes a factory fitted and aligned Ortofon cartridge)

My preference would be for the Rega / NAD option but either would outperform the Denon by miles.

Hi,

no usb isn't essential I was more interested in whether or not that model worked well as a standalone player? But I've decided to go for the genie as that seems to be highly rated everywhere. Cheers.

By coincidence, Adam Smith covered this deck in Hi Fi World about a year ago. Apparently, The Gadget Show did a piece on MP3 v. vinyl and used the Denon as the deck. Obviously, a great choice and a fair comparison.

In short, unless you really need this deck over all others, you'd do well to buy a better model for similar money.

WHF had this as a news item in April 09. Was it ever reviewed ???

I like the idea of just putting the USB stick in the front and pressing the button to record rather than lining up the laptop etc etc.

Has anybody actually heard the result .- and I do not mean through £1000 plus speakers but through the sort of hifi kit listed below.

Is it acceptable or "flat ho-humness" like WHF reported the Ion profile.

Agree with that, unless you need USB I'd definitely go for the P1 mentioned above.

Anybody from WHF or resellers got an opinion if it is one star crud or 3/4 bearable.

Hi Ravey Gravey Davy,

USB stick works and it works quite well . I personally use Denon DP 200USB and I am satisfied. The overall performance is good if compared with other turntables of this price bracket. The USP of DP 200USB is it works quite well with amplifiers without dedicated phono input , though the sensivity gets marginally compromised.

Avoid like the plague. Get an AD-DA converter and hook that up to the amp, use the A-to-D capability to record off LP to digital if you need that. The Genie's fine, see also Rega's P1 (although the P2 is the better deck albeit a bit pricier). NAD 533 is you can find one kicking around too.

Thanks RS- but I am not after aboslute top notch -just ease- I have a Dual CS514 and a Sony PSJ10 turntable which I can plug through my project usb but I do not want the hassle- I just want to know what a recording sounds like through my system.

Maybe somebody could e-mail me a recording of a track done with the Denon which I already have on vinyl and we can compare and decide whether it is good enough for us.

Lesson 1- read the manual

Lesson 2- read the manual again

Lesson 3 - yeh you got it.

Picked up the remote for my new Teac and saw the button "record" - go back to manual and guess what - I can record to usb from any source (except usb of course). Currently only 128 mp3 but for the moment that will do. Little gem this unit.

Actually mate, lesson 3 is "repeat 1 & 2" which I've found from my own experience is more than likely the case...!!

the record spot:Actually mate, lesson 3 is "repeat 1 & 2" which I've found from my own experience is more than likely the case...!!

In my case, if I haven't got it after 1 and 2, then 3, give up and go home-you're never gonna get it.

Thanks - I got the Denon Dp200USB as a birthday present and am about to start ripping 400 odd old LPs ... the first couple show how good the sound is. My only gripe is that I'm missing the first 2-4 seconds from the first track on each side of the LP. What is going on with that? Shoudl I start the recording before pressing 'start' or before the needle hits the disc?

David

Yes, it takes a few seconds for the recording to start (I think the red light flashes), so you've got to time it right.

I'm looking to buy a dj turntable for playing albums on. I was thinking about the Stanton t62. Anyone have any suggestions?
