Hi all, previously my set up was skyhd box to lcd and in the sky settings set picture resolution to automatic, with that the black screen pops up when changing from hd to sd.

Now with my Denon AV Amp with upscaling set to 1080p I would like to test the amp and compare it to the lcd, I have my sky box and blu ray directly into the amp the one hd cable to tv and the resolution on sky box still set to automatic.

With these settings is the amp or is it still the lcd doing the upscaling, thanks in advance.

Depends on how you have your AVR set up. If you've got the AVR set up to do HDMI to HDMI conversion and then set the AVR to an output resolution of 1080p your AVR will convert the Sky signal to 1080p before it reaches the TV. However you can then turn off video conversion (scaling) on a per input basis. This is done by going to the source select menu and then go to Video -> Video Convert -> Off. Once you've done this the AVR is now passing through the video signal at its input resolution so the TV can do the scaling. I experimented with this on my AVR-3808 and found that on my older Panasonic LCD the amp scaled much better than the TV but with my new(er) Sony, the TV is the better scaler (again a pretty noticeable difference). My AVR is an older model with the Faroudja chip in it so is in no way indicative of performance on newer Denon AVRs.

BTW a great test of scaling performance is to run the Sky News or Sky Sports New SD channels with the ticker on the bottom of the screen. Poor scalers will display stuttering on this whereas good ones it will be smooth as a baby's bottom.

Hi I have the amp set up this way to upscale alright, the thing is with this set up does it matter if have the resolution setting on the skyhd box to automatic or 1080i, oh thsnks for your reply by the way.

I would leave the Sky set to Automatic. If you set it to 1080i then the Sky box will upscale everything before it outputs it and the scaler in the Sky box is atrocious.
