Sorry, but it is part of my job! (And I thought people would want to know - as a lot of people have mentioned/requested it - that the Group Test is imminent)

This is going to be a good stand off, i do like these top dog shootouts!

I dont think id like to even put money on this one, now if it was a competition about cosmetics id definately go with the Pioneer 91 as i think its gorgeous, as much as i like my Denon 2500 i still love the pioneer looks better.

But its whats under the bonnet that counts.

Is there going to be other stand offs with other players Clare?

Ooooooooo at last. May I ask what the line up will be? I'm guessing:

Denon 3800
Pioneer 91
Sony BDP-5000es
Marantz BD8002 (which is a reboxed Denon 3800 with some tweeks and changes, no?)

But then what? New Arcam player??? Oppo? Something more exotic? Be very interested to hear as there are very few at the top level.

My guess is that the Denon DVD3800BD will come up on top - just.

Will someone here please be so kind as to announce the winner of this Group Test here? Here in Perth, the What Hi Fi magazines take an eternity to be released. It would be at the end of April, before the latest issue hits newsagencies here.

Thanks.

Dan.

It's exactly that big-four line-up, Will - Arcam's player (and any other high-end notables) still months away...

I hate to be a pooper but the Pioneer 91 MUST be considered better than the Denon 3800, both received 5 starts, yet the Pioneer at £2000 is over double the price of the Denon. If the picture and sound were not as good as the Denon then where would the extra £1100 be justified.
Of course pound for pound it may be a different matter.

john your refereing to the Denon 2500T. The Test will have the top model 3800,The one below their reference BluRay player which will cost about 4K :p. There is a new post in the News section of the website with the recent Denon price rises vs the original price, check it out.

Great Test What Hi-Fi!!!!!!!

The which is better debate has been raging for months on forums. There are camps that like one and camps that like the other. The really interesting thing is to look at the price that each is available for.

The Denon 3800 was being priced at £1250 for over a month before the price rises kicked in, now at £1400 odd.
The Pioneer 91 has not been seen below about £1450 as far as I can tell.
The Sony S5000es has been as low as £879 and is now available for £900.
The Marantz I don't know.

The RRPs are very different, and suggest that these products have been pitched at the same purchasers (pretty much). I think Sony may struggle to be taken as seriously by AVphiles. Maybe they'll change their mind at these prices. That's just my view. On outright ability, the views of those who've tested them elsewhere would put this as a shootout between the Pioneer and Denon. No telling who'll win. But when you factor in price, it is starting to be hard to ignore the Sony.

This is where WHFSV come in. Really looking forward to seeing where they come down and why. Good luck all!
