If anyone knows of a great receiver, futureproofed with 3D and 4K etc, and no more than £450, I'd hugely appreciate it.

Well, the 810 fits all of your criteria except the phono input. Is there an affordable phono preamplifier that would solve your problem here, thereby giving you a wider choice of AVR?

According to the manual on RS website, the 810 does have a phono in.

But no preamp built in.

This is pretty cheap, but is it any good. Any ideas?

I'm drawn to this receiver, price mainly, but so many good things inside it, and seems pretty futureproofed.

Will it be as good or better than my 2400es soundwise?

Any known problems with it?

Any opinions please?

The customer reviews are good, so I'm guessing it does a decent enough job. You could start a hi-fi thread asking the same question. Others more qualified than I can hopefully advise.

For some reason, my dealer advised me against buying Denon receivers last year, apparently because the quality of components isn't good. I cannot verify his claims. In fact, a couple more dealers told me the same. Best to speak to your trusted dealer to check this. I've not heard of a simple complaint on the forums regarding Denon receivers.

With a relatively cheap preamp (assuming it does all you need it to), the 810 is still worth considering... I haven't heard the 2400es, but I'd be surprised if the 810 didn't represent a noticeable step up in performance with films.

Having checked more thoroughly, which I should have done before buying,

I noticed that the 810 won't do 4k pass through (the 820, 1020, and 673 do, in case that's a factor in your decision).

Whatever you decide, an audition would seem essential. As you're attaching a turntable, I assume you want your receiver to do a decent job with music. The 810 might not offer the best value in this regard.

Isn't it abit too early to worry about 4k tech?

When/if it eventualy arrives,in some shape or form, the avr's of the day will offer better decoding surely?

Thanks BB

Well it's a little bit of a concern, but as long as I get a 5 year warranty with it, I can't see a problem.

Thanks for your help Strapped, especially as I seem to have completely hijacked your thread.

Will start a new thread specifically on the 2311.

No problem, though I'm not sure I've actually been any help!

Another plus with going the Yamaha Aventage route:

http://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/aventage-series/aventage_extended_guarantee/

That saved me another 50 quid at RS, as the free three year warranty will do me.

And hijack away.... I've made my purchase and the thread is redundant as far as I'm concerned. I can't offer advice on the Denon beyond pointing to reviews (like you wouldn't have read them already).

With regard to the 810's lack of 4k pass through, it's not a problem from my end. My objective was to get as good a 3D-ready receiver as I could in terms of sound. The 810 represents the best value I could find without spending a fair bit more than I'd like. On that basis I'm perfectly content with my choice.
