Hi, my name's Nathan. I'm new to the forum so I'm just gonna go ahead and post my question.

I'm looking into buying some new floorstanding speakers as i've outgrown my old BOSE 301 SERIES II. I'm only 19 years old, so I listen to a lot of different music genres. That is why i'm looking for a speaker that is capable of playing reggae, rap or hip-hop but also house or drum and bass. I prefer floorstanders because from what i've heard they deliver enough bass to leave out a subwoofer. I really liked the Teufel Ultima 40 mk2. They seem like a lot of speaker for the money. Anyway, I'd love to have your opinions on it as i don't know all the brands and speakers.

The amp i'm using is an old sony sony ta-fa5es gold. I would use them in my room at home for now but soon in my student appartment. The room they will be in is 5x5m or something.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Nathan, and welcome to the forum.

If you like a smoother sound try:

- Rega RS3

- Epos Epic 5

If you like a cleaner, more forward sound try:

- Focal Chorus 714V

- Tannoy Revolution DC4T

You may need to get ex-dem, or bargain hard on a couple of the above.

I do enjoy a forward sound and i love a clean bass. It's something i really miss in my bookshelf speakers. Those Tannoy speakers look very nice. I've found myself looking at those before. Does anyone know something more about how the Teufel speakers compete against these speakers? The reviews are always very positive but i don't know how they compete against the Tannoys for example.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

I'd be looking at something like Q Acoustics 2050i, although they are quite tall. Focal seems a good call.

They look nice but they're the same price as the B&W 684, which sound i really like. I read somewhere they were planning on updating the 600 series. Does anyone know something about that?

If you are willing to go the second hand fleabay route you may get lucky on a second hand pair of PMC GB1's.

Being an owner of these I would highly recommend them. Excellent bass without the need for a sub woofer. Not fussy on placement. Serious value for money 2nd hand for a premium pair of speakers. Your amp will drive them easily. I am into the same sort of music as you. They are small for floorstanders but still chuck out plenty of sound.

If you are patient they will pop up all the time on fleabay.

Have even found an example for you. And no I am not selling them mods !

@psurquhart

Thanks for the reply but I think I would rather buy something new. I don't have a lot of experience with 2nd hand. If i would however buy 2nd hand i'd rather buy from someone I know or a friend of a friend kind of thing.

I must say while searching Aamazon (uk) I noticed a fair price difference in hifi compared to local stores (I live in Belgium). Amazon being notably cheaper. Are there UK based stores who ship to Belgium?

@nathandb Richersounds for example. Btw: I am talking about the normal DC6T's, not the special edition.

I just saw your recent post. I also live in Belgium and I had them shipped in from the UK. There are only a few retailers in the UK that do that (saves you quite a sum of money compared to the prices in Belgium). If you want I could give you their details in a personal message.

Take a look at Monopulse speakers & drop Allan Hendry an email if you are interested - he's been known to have some new (old stock) model S within your budget.... maybe even model A for not much more. Highly decent bloke to deal with and very pleased with mine.

I see I can't send private messages and I am not quite sure whether what I will say now conflicts with forum rules or not, but audioaffair.co.uk ships to Belgium. They also calculate a very reasonable price for shipment (definitely less than when you would try to arrange it yourself). They also gave me a nice discount on the items that I bought.

@Broner : Thanks for the info, i'm really glad I found the site!

I think I'm going for the Tannoys Revolution DC6T or the Focal 714v. I can get both at almost the same price. Which ones would you guys recommend given my setup and music preferences?

It is :)

I must say the Tannoys have a cleaner design. In my opinion this is also somewhat important. If your planning to keep the speakers for a long time a clean design is always welcome.

I also really can't help you with your decision. For one, I don't know the Focals. But also I really don't listen to any of your music styles on my DC6Ts.

With respect to their appearance: they really look good. I used to keep the speaker grill off, but that also makes the speakers more noticable. Eventually I decided to put the grills on.

Had anyone heard both the Dc6t and the kef q500's? I can get a nice discount on the kef's but they look a bit old fashioned because of the english cherry finish.

In my local dealers, I demoed the DC6T's along with Rega RS3's (using both my own Rega Brio 2000 amp and the new Brio R) then the dealer brought out the Kef Q500's for comparison.

Personally I prefered the DC6T's and RS3's both of which I then had on home demo.

I decided to get some HC gear instead, but when I get back to looking for floorstanders, the DC6T's and RS3's will be on my shortlist.

I'm pretty shure I'm gonna go for the DC6T's. I keep reading good things about them and even the brand in general gets almost exclusively 4 or 5 star ratings on the site. Can't go wrong with these speakers :)

thanks everyone, this has been realy helpfull!

In this game, there is no such thing as "can't go wrong".....and good reviews are certainly no guarantee of success.

If the DC6Ts have a weakness, it's that they "can" get a bit edgy in the treble when pushed (equipment and room dependant). For some, this is a deal-breaker, while others enjoy the extra "zing".

I believe that what you say is certainly true but it's still a big step up from my old setup, which makes me very happy!

I ordered the tannoys, can't wait to test them!

A little off topic maybe but does anyone know something more about my amp? It's an old sony TA-FA5ES (champagne color). I know my father paid a decent amount of money for it back in the day but is it still a good amp, or should I maybe check on making an update in the near future?

I had a Sony TA-F4A back in the early 80s, and it was a decent budget amp......yours is a good step up, and provided it isn't in need of a service, should be a good match with the Tannoys.

Let us know how it goes.
