A poor fitting usb lead is the obvious culprit. Try another usb socket on your laptop or another computer to be sure. If it is within warrantee ask for a replacement lead or if new, a complete new unit.

Third party usb leads are readily available if you are out of warrantee, try one of them.

i assumed id have one that fit after i read your suggestion, but all the ones i have dont fit so i will try see if replacing usb lead works

Check with other sockets/computers if you haven't already, might be a dodgy port on the lap top. first things first!

It does seem to be a dodgy connection on the dac side, laptop is quite new the usb ports are still tight i also found a review that says static can make it disconnect but the socket on the dac does feel a little loose, think ill just put up with it til i can afford a new dac, thanks for the help i really didnt even think of changing the lead D'oh 🙂

Like all of the Cambridge dacs, I am sure it is quite capable and will see you through an upgrade or two.

Depending on how you feel about this, I would be thinking about glueing the mini usb plug in place, it really does not impact on funtionally and might fix your annoying issue at next to no cost. Only really of issue if you wanted to sell it on, personally I like to keep a cheap, spare dac around for 'emergencies'.

Up to you.

I will keep it yes, i was suprised when i got it that it sounded a lot better than my sony bluray player which plays SACD so thought must have a decent dac in it, the main reason im thinking about getting the arcam ir dac2 is more inputs and hopefully sound better of course, but i will clean the sockets and connectors on this one and then go from there, cheers 🙂
