I've been thinking of adding a DAC to my hifi set up, any recommendations as to what dac would suit/blend in well with my KI Sig's?

I would say that you should sell your cd player and move on to digital music, then you would appreciate the difference that a DAC will make, otherwise, i would say just keep the cd player.

I suppose I'm at risk of being pernickety, but as he's already got a CD player, he's been at the digital music bar for some time now...!

Not all of us class digital music stored on a hard drive as moving on!

DACs can also be a great way of getting better CD sound, although I think you would have to buy something pretty expensive to improve on the KI-Sig.

my opinion only: add a circa £200 DAC with lossless files and you get the equivalent of circa £1k cd player sound. However, to improve your cd player with CDs, you will need to go to something like the Benchmark DAC1 at circa £800. For the record, Ive recently compared a £400 Arcam cdp with CDs (Plastic Penguin's) against my Dacmagic with lossless files and the difference was clear.

Cheers Matthew, that's exactly my train of thought. I want to get better ( If Possible ) sound from my cd's....

I'm more............eh........ old school and have'nt totally embraced the digital/pc/hdd etc etc form of listening of music,

Call me old fashioned......but hey.......

But we all know it isn't going to be that simple - the urge is already there...that itch has to be scratched.

I bought the Cambridge Dacmagic and added it into my system when it included the KI Sig. I was ready to swear that I heard an improvement. So, for £200 I was arguably boosting the performance of what already has been claimed to be a CDP that outclasses any modern sub-£1000 CDP - magic! Of course, it was also added to improve the sound of Spotify and iTunes out of my laptop and also my BDP, so I considered it to be a good purchase.

Of course, as you see, my particular itch continued to be an irritation and I pursued my own Nirvana a little further still, but the Dacmagic is still there, albeit no longer for CDP use.

There's a much cheaper and better option of improving the sound you have without buying DAC or moving towards computer audio.

Are you handy with a soldering iron or know anyone who is? There are numerous threads on the web that detail some modifications you can perform on your KI Signature that anyone who's competent with a soldering iron can perform.

I modified my entry level CD56 (which has much the same circuit board as the KI but uses less and cheaper components) earlier this year. Doing the whole thing myself cost me in the region of about £40 for all of the components but the resulting improvement in sound quality outstripped what even my Densen B-410 was capable of.

The Marantz CD players were rightly praised in their day and still hold up well today, but not very many people know how much more they are capable of given a few hours of work under the bonnet.

Be wary of adding a DAC. It will change the sound, but a DAC can only ever perform as well as the transport that feeds it, and the transport in the Marantz is it's weakest part. There's an incredible musicality to the Marantz players that I have yet to hear from a computer based setup.
