The current dacXP is well past its sell by date now and you can get better sound for much less money with more modern dac.

DacXP + psxr £3000 streemX2 £1200 instead get a M-dac £600 and a SBT use EDO for usb out and you have better sound for about £800.

If you need analogue in build a sinple passive with a alps blue for about 15 quid and that will whoop any Cyrus preamp made so far yes they are that poor.

If you want to buy a streamer then their Stream X2 is the obvious choise. If you have an Ipad then get the cheaper one without the remote and use your Ipad as the remote.

You can actually connect a laptop to the DAC XP. You need to buy a USB to Spdif converion box. Musical Fidelity does two nifty little boxes The vlink2 and a vlink 2 192. The difference is that the 192 box clsots a lot more but handles 192 x24 whilst the cheaper box "just" does upto 96. They also act as a buffer and so cut down on judder. I've got the cheaper one and it works very well. You can pick up a 2nd hand vlink2 for abput £60 on that well known auction site

I must confess to being a Cyrus fan, but if their stuff is falling behind the curve, I may have to think about alternative brands or just wait until they finally do something with the DAC-XP+ to bring it up to date.

Trouble is, on this side of the Atlantic, prices go from run-of-the-mill brands from Bestbuy (kind of like Comet before they went belly-up - everyhting from boom-boes to fridges under one roof and staffed by college kids who think iPods are "it" and have never heard a decent hifi in their lives ) to boutique (a new BMW can be had cheaper) really really quickly.

The US hifi mags are so sh*t scared of being sued by manufacturers, everything they review sounds "brilliant" or "superb" or "wonderful". Loads of graphs, pictures and techno-babble but none of them will tell you how good or bad the kit actually sounds.

I swear to God if you gave them my 97-year-old grand-dad's 30+ year old Goodmans Module 80 and Wharfdales with new badges on them they'd be "fantastic" as well.

I was hoping just to be able to hook up a little 1 terabyte USB3 portable hard disk, with all my old (and new) CDs"FLAC'd" onto it. It'll keep 'er indoors happy (relatively speaking) as there won't be shelves full of CDs sitting in the rumpus room and it'll keep me happy as the CDs can be put away in pristine (new) or repaired (old) form for posterity.

So the obvious question now is, if Cyrus aren't going to come out with an all new all singing all dancing DAC-XP+ replacement any time soon, what should I look at instead? Price point would be around the same as a DAC-XP+ and twin Mono-X300s, and I'd like to stick to the same basic form of separate source(s), DAC, pre-amp (inegrated with the DAC or not) and twin power amps to bi-amp some decent speakers (probably ProAcs or similarly not stupidly expensive). I'd like it to be British, all one brand, and not too hard on the eyes. Voltage doesn't matter as I can hook up a clean 230 volt single-phase supply if needed.

If you just want to connect up a hd or memstick with tunes on just get a cheapo blu-ray player and if you also have a seperate dac just coax or optical out to your dac.

If you just want to hook up a portable hard disk - get the Stream x2 and connect that into the DAC-XP+. That has a USB input and will do exactly what you want. It would be far cheaper than trying to replace your existing system. You will need to buy a sreamer anyway - I don't think I have seen a DAC/ Pre-amp that also plays FLAC.

You could as well put all the stuf on a NAS and use that as your input rather than a portable drive.

Sounds good, but everyone is telling me the DAX-XP+ is past its sell-by date and better to wait for the next incarnation of the DAC-XP? Isn't going to happen this weekend, or next, or...., so I can wait. Just thinking about the possibilities.

The next version of the DAC-XP+ will probably not be soon and will not include any additional connections if their 30th aniversary edition is what will be coming. They will improve the DAC and power - but no USB connections. Even if they did so - you would still need something to drive the connection, either a PC or a streamer

People say the DAC-XP+ is past it's sell by date probably because it uses 24 bit DAC chips instead of the latest 32 bit DAC chips. But its what you do with the DAC chips that is far more important than the speed of the chip.

Some people just don't like the Cyrus sound - fair enough. That is what hi-fi is all about.

I have bought the Streamx2 and put all my data on a central NAS and use a Netgear passthrough Powerline 500 to give me fast wired network connections. Using an ipad to control the whole set-up. What more can SWMBO need?
