Hello,

Hoping someone can offer some help. I think I may struggle to demo either of these with my current speakers and amp, so am looking for some advice.

I'm moving on from a Marantz DV4100OSE, which I've been pretty pleased with, and am thinking I'll probably go for separate Blue-Ray and CD players, as while I think a decent Blue-Ray player will beat the Marantz for DVD, they may well struggle with CDs.

I've currently got a Marantz SR6001 and (full) Tannoy Arena, but can imagine in a few years' time upgrading and spending a fair bit, maybe with specific music components. I like a full, clear, full, detailed sound, and look out for good instruments, mid-range, and voices on songs, plus good attack at high frequency, like the violins in Style council's "Shout to the Top", and an ability to do good base on things like Groove Armada's "Superstylin'".

Having a look, I think stuff like the Regas Apollo is overkill at the moment, but the CD6002 (£200) looked very good, and would probably last me for a few years. However, the CD6s is now available for £400, and I'm wondering if it's worth the extra outlay in terms of sound quality, given my preferences? Also, is its lack of HDCD a worry?

I'm also thinking the CD6s is more future proof in terms of upgrading my other pieces of kit, and is also upgradeable, so should last me longer.

Wondering if anyone has any advice on these players, or thinks I'd be better looking at something different altogether?

Any opinions much appreciated.

If you can afford the CD6 now, Id go for it and live with it being overkill for your current system at the moment. It has a great upgrade path (both factory upgrade all the way to CD8SE and also offboard psu, the PSX-R), and will comfortably outperform the Marantz, imo.

I'd agree with those sentiments, however, Cyrus/Marantz [IMHO] isn't the greatest match. Both brands have enormous plus points within their price bracket, and both have different sonic characters. Visually, they are two different animals.

Moreover, it is ESSENTIAL to audition kit. Find yourself a dealer who stocks both brands and enjoy.

Good luck

I'd go for the Cyrus CD6s and the difference in outlay is certainly worth it. The Cyrus CD6s (mid-range) is a superior product to the Marantz CD6002 (budget) in every regard.

Lack of HDCD is only a worry if you have a lot of HDCD enabled discs. If you don't then it's not a problem.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for the advice. I think the general gist seems to be the CD6s is a better CD player, and one for the future, which I had no doubt of really, but the CD6002 would probably be good enough at the moment with my current kit.

It's not so much getting an audition of the Marantz amp / Cyrus player, but more about getting a listen with the Tannoy speakers at the same time. I went to another city to demo the Tannoys before I bought them. Also that the £400 offer was something I'd seen on the net. However, I'll try at least to hear the CD6s with the Marantz amplifier.

By the way, I'd already tried cleaning the lens with a disk, and tried it with a cotton bud at the weekend, but it's still the same.

Just as a last question, (and I think I know the answer), I'm looking ultimately to be able to play CD / DVD and BlueRay. I wondered if I might be better getting a DVD / CD combo. Would players like the Marantz DV7001 or Arsam DV135 rival the CD6s for CD replay?

Thanks for all your advice on this.

Is the Marantz SA7001 available in the UK? It's a class above the 6002 and more comparable with the Cyrus. I haven't heard the Cyrus, but the SA7001 is detailed, lively and plays SACD.

Usually DVD players sound brighter and more artificial - they don't really compare with specialised CD players but are not bad. If you don't play that many CDs, then they're a viable alternative.

No doubt the Cyrus is far superior to the Marantz. And as you say it is totally upgradeable with factory refits and power and mono blocks addable. This is a sweet CD player and well worth the money at £600 but ast 3400 much more attractive.
