I have a Cyrus 8 xp d qx at the heart of my system and it keeps cutting out. The amp has built in protection circuitry that will switch the amp off if it is overheating etc but I think mine is cutting out far too often. I play my music fairly loud at times but nothing that I would call excessive. This is happening with various source components.

The amp has as much space round about it as I can give it with one side completely exposed so it is far from being boxed in.All my sources are connected digitally and the speakers are bi-wired via the two sets of speaker terminals.

I also have my amp connected to my surround reciever to power the front speakers for movies etc but the level on the amp is set so high on the Cyrus on av direct that there is guite a lot of hum coming from the speakers, not enough to detract from the soundtrack at listening volumes but very audible when you switch to av direct with nothing playing.

I was just wondering if anybody else has encountered anything similar? I have contacted the service dept. at Cyrus about the cutting out & I am awaiting their response.

I had a Cyrus 3 for about 10 years before I traded it for this amp & it never cut out & it probably got pushed harder than this amp.

Cyrus 8 xp d qx,Cyrus Dad 3q Cd,2x psxr power supplies, Mission 752f, Sony 1200es receiver, Mission centre,Jbl surrounds, Sw250 sub, Sky Hd,LG BD390 Blu-ray,PS3, Xbox 360, Panasonic 42"

There is a very good forum for Cyrus users called CyrusUnofficial where someone recently posted a query in the technical section about a similar problem with that particular amp.

The AV direct just sets the amplifier to pass through what it's given - the actual signal level going into your Cyrus is controlled by the AV amp. It could be that the level of signal coming from the AV amp is too high. Try lowering the dB level of all the speakers (via the amp's menu) by about 5dB, and then try the system again with stuff it's cut out on before. You may need to play it at a higher volume to achieve the same sort of levels you had it at before.

Not sure how clear that reads to everyone - so let your AV amp do it's auto set up, then knock off 5dB off ALL channels. This will lower the signal being sent out to the Cyrus, which MIGHT stop the Cyrus cutting out. Worth a try....

David,

Thanks very much for your response.I will give that a try to bring the levels down but my amp cuts out even when the av amp is not on.

I have had an e-mail back from Cyrus telling me I will have to return the unit to them to have a look at it.

Have the exact same problem with my Cyrus 8 xp d qx amp. When I have the amp turned up to a reasonable volume (or what my wife calls loud) it cuts out and shows a overheating error. Amp has plenty of clearance around it so do not believe ventilation is an issue. Like you I had a Cyrus 3 before hand (took advantage of the Cyrus trade in offer last year) and never had a problem with this.

Have you had any progress on this fault? Did Cyrus find a fault?

Thanks.

Another Cyrus product with a problem???. Not good. Unless this is sorted, I'm gonna stop recommending Cyrus to go with our speakers. Arcaydis and EB. I hope they sort this quickly.

Out of interest Mr Allen I was going to ask what amps you recommended / tested with the Arcaydis....

This is probably premature. I spend a lot of time on cyrusunofficial.co.uk where there are lots of people with this amp - haven't heard this problem before - believe me, if there is a problem it is screamed from the rooftops! Would you stop recommending a product which has sold X 1000's because of a couple of problems reported on one forum?? This is not like the widespread problem with the CD transport mechanism. Geez...

And it is the compound of the CD mech + this that makes me wonder. I'll bide my time and see what transpires.

Richard, it's only the 2nd on this forum in 18 months - maybe that's a hasty reaction bearing in mind your 'profesional' capacity.

@ eternal optimist - agree. I'm not actually a fan of the products, overrated weedy things that they are, but I like the company. They have always been extremely helpful and disarmingly honest whenever I have contacted them.

Gaverlad what db level are you playing your amp? I normally stay around 33db but have on ocassions gone down to 20db just to see how my 8xpd copes with the KEFs. I have never experienced any cut outs though so it must be faulty.
