I was going to spend upto about £500 each on a cd player, amp and speakers when i recently came into a bit of money and was looking at maybe cyrus 6 cd player and amplifier or arcam cd 73, b&w 684 and someone mentioned rega r3.

However i have since decided that i cant justify spending so much (need a holiday with the kids ect) so i bought a cyrus 3 in mint condition on ebay for £137 and am now looking for partners. eventually i would like to add a psx-r to the cyrus 3. I went for the cyrus as i can accomodate it easily next to my av kit on my rack where i will be using it with av amp pre-outs and have i allways like cyrus kit.

For a cd player would the arcam cd73 be a good partner (i can accomodate 1 last full size bit of kit on my tv rack and i can get it for £239 which seems amazing value). Alternatively i could pick up a cyrus dad3q for about the same price as the cyrus 3 amp.

For speakers would the b&w 684 or rega r3 match, i am currently using mission m73.

I will probably upgrade the cd player first as im currently using a pioneer dvd 575a and then the speakers, of which i would also like to add the matching centre.

I listent to mostly rock (beatles, stones, pink floyd, creence, hendric, cream, white stripes, libertines) and some techno and electro. My room is about 3m x 6m

I would be inclinced to look at B&Ws or Tannoys for the speakers with the CD73 as source. You might also like to look at the new £350 Mission standmounters. Missions always seem to work very well with Cyrus amps.

The Arcam is quite laid back but will suit much of your music taste as above. I've just bought a CD192 and have been reinforcing my purchase by looking at lots of reviews and by the sounds of things it wipes the floor with the 73. I have a 92 currently which is lovely. Probably my last night listening to it before the new one comes!

So you think the arcam cd73 would combine well with the cyrus 3 ?

And you say the arcam would suit the rock that i listen to, so what would you say are the qualities in hi fi that suit rock?

And how do you think the older cyrus dad3q would compare to the arcam cd73 ?

I can't comment on the Cyrus as I've only heard a Cyrus system at the WHF show and it sounded no better than my Arcam system, albeit more upfront and 'thrashy' to be honest. The Arcam sound suits Beatles, Floyd, Electro, Techno, W Stripes very well in my opinion, but I personally would go that extra mile and get the CD192 as I gather it's got a more upfront sound than the laid-back 73. I will be able to answr this question better in a couple of weeks as I have one on order. My current CD92 is pretty damn good though.

What I don;t know is how well the Arcam/Cyrus combo would work I'm afraid.

On speakers I've always found B&W great for dance music as they tend to have tight bass, but less suited to any acoustic/voice. The Rega R3 are supposed to be good. If I were you I would also consider Epos m12.2 or AVI Neutron IV if you want standmounts. The best way is to go to a dealer and listen though, it's time and money well spent, even if you pick the Arcam up on fleabay and buy some speakers from a dealer after auditioning. Or Sevenoaks may be able to sell you the lot at a good price. (I presume you've seen the 73 at Lintone?)

The Mission 790s - on the verge of release as we speak. Take a look on the Mission website under 79 series. I haven't heard them yet but I have a feeling they will be well worth a listen. Will be trying them myself when they are launched.

Yeah lintone is offering some crazy deals on arcam at the minute. At the minute im definatly leaning towards the cd73 with my cyrus 3 and using with my mission m73s for the time being. Then in a few months time hopefully i will take the cyrus 3 and cd73 down to sevenoaks and decide on some speakers. Im definatly after floorstanders through.

Im interested in peoples opinions on the cyrus dad 3q

Listening to Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden now and it's lovely. Go for the 192 rather than the 73, it's money well spent and you'll get it back when you sell it too so you can't lose.

Ah i noiced the 79 series on the mission site a while ago and wondered why i couldnt find them for sale anywhere (i thought it was just a another mission range that had gone under the radar or not been rated overly great)

I hope the 79 series turns out be decent range (they look pretty classy). I have allways liked mission speakers and they are long overdue a really decent range that wins some rave reviews.

Would also be inclined to try the Rega Apollo CD player. Its much better than the CD73 IMO. I had one briefly and made the mistake of parting with it. Will be putting that right soon. Its musical and slightly warm sound should be a great foil for the Cyrus amp.

what is it about newbies resurrecting dead threads that are anything between two and ten years old? This one is eight years old. Happens a lot.

I would recommend trying any of the Mission 75 original metal tweeter range to match your Cyrus 3 particularly Mission 753 or 752 but if you have a 3i then any of the later Mission 75 freedom range with the soft dome tweeters
