Hi all,

I am new here so please be gentle!

I have a budget of £300 and am considering upgrading my current hi-fi system and would like some advice on what would be a good starting point.

My current set-up is as follows:

Kenwood KA-1080 Amplifier

Wharfedale diamond 7.1's

Eltax floor standing speakers

Sony turntable

*All these components are about 16 years old!

Music is mostly played direct from my PC in all formats.

I listen to all types of music but mostly like rock, blues and jazz.

With my budget of £300 where would the best starting point be or has technology moved on so much I should start from scratch?

I know this is all very subjective so all opinions would be good to give me some idea where to start.

Many Thanks

Jamie

Firstly I would choose one pair of speakers and would recommend the Wharfedales as the better ones. They will be perfectly adequate until you can afford to upgrade them.

Then I would look at spending your £300 on a new amplifier. With your musical tastes I would be looking at the NAD C326BEE. You should get this for £250. It would be a big upgrade on your Kenwood.

Alternatively, if you want to be more ambitious, you could look at the used market.

Thanks for the info Matthew.

I would be happy to go second-hand, any ideas on what to look out for?

I would also keep the wharfdales and spend the money on the amp, Marantzpm6003 or the rotel ra04, and good cables from qed or the like.
