Why?

The receiver only decodes 11 channels, not 15, so even if you hook up a 6-channel external power amp, four of the extra channels will sound the same as two others. Either they'll swamp the other channels or the EQ software will trim them right down.
What you MIGHT be able to do is the same as I can do with its Marantz sister - hook up 13 channels and let the receiver decide which 11 from the 13 it feeds. How that works, and what it sounds like, I don't know, as 7.2.4 is more than enough in my 19 ft x 12 ft 6 media room.

My amp has 9 amplified channels but can de code 11.2 with an extra power amp.

Your amp is spec'd similar with 9 amp channels and 11.2 processing but can also have 13 pre outs (but i think thts for muti room and not surround - the extra 2 channels - might be wrong though)
So your amp will be able to pull off 7.2.4 with an extra 2 channel power amp.

Regardless thats a hell of a lot speakers to put in a room

What are the dimensions of your rooms, including the height? Which speakers are you currently using?

At this point, I would be asking myself which direction I want to go - if I'm happy with the quality of my existing 5.1 system, and whether I just want to add more speakers for room coverage, or initially remain with 5.1 and improve the general quality of the system.

Adding Atmos now would mean pointless outlay if you decide later you want a better quality system and you have to then lose money on 17 speakers. My personal opinion is to get the basics right first, then build on that later.

+1

My media room is 19 ft long and 12 ft 6 in wide.

I can discern all of the seven in-wall speakers, but it's hard to make out the effect of all four of my in-ceilings (I actually have six, but the middle two aren't actually connected).
I would say that unless you're secretly a Kensington gazillionaire with one of those iceberg basements, anything more than 7.2.4 won't be discernable in action.

The Marantz 7010 can drive up to eleven out of any thirteen speakers, provided an external power amp is connected for speakers 10, 11, 12 and 13.
Somehow the receiver decides which 11 channels of the 13 it will actually use. I guess that means it might pick seven round the rooms plus a pair of front highs or front sides and just two overheads for "voice of God" for DTS:X sources, or seven surrounds and four overheads for Atmossources. It might even be clever (and quick) enough to switch between these modes mid scene (though I doubt it).
