Am looking at an AMP with the new HD surround sound. If I connect the dvd player via HDMI to the amp & then the amp to the tv, will I always have to listen through the amp ? If I just want to listen through the tv will the amp still need to be switched on ?

because it's a digital signal, I would imagine yes (on mine, I have to turn on the amp). Begs the question - if you have an a/v amp, why would you not use it!?

thanks for your reply. But some things like kids shows don't need to go through an amp.

on disc. Just wondered if the amp would need to be on for the sound & picture to work.

Mine doesn't. I can watch a dvd, or my V+ box or anything really, without switching the amp on. The amp has to be on standby to allow it to pass the signal through to the tv, but it's not on, and the sound and picture come from the tv as normal. As soon as I switch the amp on, the volume stops coming from the tv, and just comes from the amp.

great to hear that it works for you. Am thinking of the Sony STR-DA2400ES. Thanks for your reply.
