Connect TV / DVD / Sat receiver

I really need some help trying to understand all the various connection options please.

I have the following equipment:

HD TV with 2 scart / 3 HDMI

Virgin Cable box with 2 scart and 1 HDMI

DVD recorder 2 scart and 1 HDMI

I have to admit I don't fully understand the whole HDMI thing. All i want is the best possible picture from the equipment all working in perfect harmony.

I have this idea that I connect both the DVD and V box to TV via HDMI cables and the V box to the DVD R with a scart lead but would really like some help and advice please.
