Hello

I'm about to buy a new TV but keen to know if it's possible to connect my MacBook to play Quicktime and AVI files on the TV and, if so, how I go about it? What wires do I need? What format would the files have to be in? And, what features would the TV need to have to make this possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks

I have a MacBook Pro and it has a DVI-D port and comes with a DVI -> VGA adapter cable.

Your TV should have at least a VGA input port that supports a decent resolution, SXGA at least.

For playback I would suggest VLC, it's probably the best there is. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I have connected my macbook pro up to my TV using a DVI-HDMI cable. There are plenty for sale on ebay or in electronics shops. Just beware though if you have an ordinary macbook as it'll have mini-dvi.

Its as simple as plugging one end into your laptop and the other into the TV. Switch to that input on the TV and you wil see your desktop. You can change the resolution to fit your needs and have the TV display the same as your laptop, or have it as an extra monitor giving you more space on your desktop.

As for what format files have to be in, it doesn't matter. It's not the TV playing them, it's your mac. Pretty much any LCD TV will be suitable. Bear in mind that the higher resolution TVs though will give you a bigger desktop.
