Class A amps..

Definately snap some pics when you get'em. Those epicon's are gorgeous  :rockout:

Wouldn't you need monoblocks for those though?

Hi Mac..To be honest Im not looking for alternative and I can't find.. If Im allowed I'll replace my speakers probably( or beer).Dali Epicon 6

Hi Iceman,

If you were looking for an alternative, I'd suggest a Devialet. It's a Class A amp with a slaved digital power amp. The sonic character is broadly similar to the AMS35i, i.e. as transparent as it gets, but the Devialet has even less distortion than the AMS35i and chucks out much more power.

It also uses less energy and has a very fine built-in DAC and a lovely remote control.

But you probably knew I was going to say all that ...

I've found class A amps always sound more powerful than their rated output, are very revealing and detailed, and have an appealing sonic signature that sets them apart from AB or D designs.

The downside of course, is the high temperature - according to one retailer, over time the heat generated by class A transistors will weaken the circuit boards and innards of the amp, leading to eventual failure. Of course, this retailer didn't sell class A amps, so maybe he was exaggerating criticism of the competition!

Anyway I use class A Accuphase amps in one of my systems and would not change them for anything.

Class A biasing removes a type of distortion that is no longer a problem for any modern amplifier, crossover distortion. Given the cost of electricity nowadays I wouldn't buy one because I doubt that the difference is audible.

The MF A1 was actually class AB biased for a high quiescent current. It would have probably melted at full class A.

I've been using a Sugden A21a class A amp for over 10 years now. It has a truely beautiful sound and regular testing of other amps in the £1k price bracket always seem to fail. The downside is that I have it in a south facing room which gets pretty hot in summer. The Sugden throws out a lot of heat. The heat has made no difference to performance or reliability. I have just had a couple of the pots cleaned but otherwise it has been fantastic.

Sugden are fine amps. Had the A21 myself and upgraded to a Masterclass, if you get the chance, treat yourself to one.

How big was the difference between A21 and the Masterclass?

Quite hard to quantify, but I'll try... obviously a bit more power, but the overall SQ

gives the listener more of everything... a big holagraphic sound, better seperation, vocals are very natural. Equally great both at low and high level listening. The guy I sold mine to, fell in love with it as soon as he heard it.

Expect you're wondering why I sold it!

Certainly are. It's been about 10 years since I heard a Sudgen (back to when they were just giving the A21 the Masterclass look), and we've been recently playing with the A21SE and Masterclass IA4. Beautiful sounding amps. Not quite as much bass control as the Devialet, understandably, but all other aspects were excellent, even from the A21SE (with the Sonus Faber Venere 2.5). The IA4 was giving the KEF Reference 203/2s what for - I really didn't expect it to perform that well with those fussy gits!

It was the base control that I found hard to live with in my small listening room and one of the major factors why I changed it for the Accuphase, but I would always recommend Sugden to anyone .

It's just down to the individual's priorities - some people don't give a fig about bass, and just want a nice mid and treble, which the Sugden does admirably. There's nothing wrong with the bass, it's just not quite as tight as some others, but with some speakers (and even music), that won't matter.

I make you right. It was just in my particular room I was getting a lot of boom and it really spoilt what was a lovely combo... Sugden and Harbeth.

My ambition is to one day hear a Class A Accuphase, but can't see it happening any time soon, as the nearest dealer is up in Lancs.

Hi iceman16

Class A amplifiers are also generally big, heavy and pricey.

All the best

Rick @ Musicraft

You don't give them much cop then?

Hi manicm

I am not sure what you're asking?

Rick @ Musicraft

Ok, in plain English, you've given this sort of reply to Class A amps before, you don't think much of them then?

Hi manicm

Thanks for clarifying.

If i didn't think much of Class A amplification then one of the amplifiers i wouldn't be using is a big, heavy and expensive Krell FPB600  The FPB600 is here in the store and as far as i recall my FPB600 is an amp which (including today) has in one way or another impressed all visitors over the last few years. I have mentioned FPB600 on this Forum before.
