Chord Odyssey Boomy

I have a Pioneer LX85 bi amped 5.1 to Monitor Audio RX6 AV12 with Odyssey 2 at 2.5 m lengths. I have noticed that the bass extension seems a bit boomy (over extended?) and not as tight as I expect.

I have had Odyssey 2 cables now for about 5 months, probably about 500 hours of use. Would you have expected them to have run in yet? I have heard reports of the bass tightening up over time.

Can anyone else share their experiences of running in this cable?

Well the amp certainly doesn't sound boomy, and I've used Odyssey on all sorts of speakers including the KEF Blades and ProAc K6's. I'm guessing you're getting a better bass delivery than you used to, and the RX6's aren't conveying that very well.

I would try moving the speakers, - Away from the rear wall, away from each other, away from any corners - where you can to improve the sound.

Or you can try moving the listening position as well

I emailed Chord and a really helpful chap called Nigel suggested that as i am using milty banana plugs the following applies:

Counter intuitive as it may sound try removing the banana plugs and connecting the bare wire directly to the speakers. There is a logic to this. The banana plug you have is a screw type rather than solder connection. In our experience a lot of banana plugs of this type actually degrade rather than improve sound. For our factory terminations we use a solder type banana plug and it is of a different design to the one you are using. The one we use gives you a single point of very high pressure contact. Really helps with signal transfer, particularly in terms of definition and control.

The thing about a screw type banana plug is that the conductor is every bit as exposed as it would be if connected directly to the binding post. By-passing the banana plug should bring a noticeable gain in terms of definition and control and I think would be well worth trying. I hope you get the chance to try this and please do let me know the results.

I have spent many a happy hour moving my speakers around to squeeze every available ounce of detail out of my cables

Tried what the guy at chord suggested and there is some impovement... but not massive.

Maybe boomy is a little misleading... The bass seems to be more pronounced than the rest of the frequencies, but not distorted. There is masses more detail in there, just seems a bit out of balance. Is this due to the greater bass extension with these cables? Maybe it is going from QED silver anniversary XT to Odyysey 2 ???

That sounds like the speakers are too close to a boundary wall - probably the rear wall.

different speaker cables sound different you are hearing proof of that - I have found a cable change similar to a system component change shows you the error in your set up I.e. speaker placement which is more important that most other factors full stop.

Try moving them - then run mccac again doesn't take long - I have run it about 1000 times in my life time

I have room size of 17' x 13', speakers firing across the 13' side, and I found the Odyssey a little overpowering in the bass dept. I changed back to SilverScreen which has given a much better balance to the sound.
