Hi

I want to start building up a good(ish) hifi system

At the moment I have a really old mirant amp (as in valve it’s so old) with a crappy cd player and some ok old again speakers.

I would like by something to start off for about £200-£300. What should I start with?

I assumed the amp would be the first to replace. What should I get? I would like the amp to allow me to hook it up to my xbox360 and TV so I can use it as a cinema system. Is this possible.

Thanks

Tom

Can you give some more details? Are you eventually looking for a 5.1 surround cinema system that you can build up gradually or do you just want an amp for music that will also allow the TV and XBox to be connected up for better sound?

What is your current CDP, amp and speakers?

You could buy a pair of these and hook them up to the variable output of your TV. This way you can enjoy the sound of anything connected to the TV through the speakers.

Later on you can add a Beresford Caiman+ and connect your TV and Xbox360 to the digital inputs. Then connect the variable outputs to the Wharfedale speakers.

If you do decide to go for a full 5.1/7.1 Surround system (or a better Hi-Fi system) in the future, then the Wharfedale/Beresford combo can be used in a second system or with your PC/Mac.

What I really want to end up with is a good hifi system and a 5.1/7.1 surround sound cinema system

At the moment I can't afford to just go out and spend a shed load on an entire new system so I thought I would build up. Firstly is it possible and advisable to use a single amplifier for your TV and music. If so what amp would be a good start?

For now I can just use the speakers I have and the CD player I have and upgrade when I can
