CD signal with A&R Cambridge A60

I am still the proud owner of a A&R Cambridge A60 Amplifier that I bought in
1981, and it has not missed a beat.

I have found that the signal from a CD player
is very strong, and I have to have the volume on the Amp as low as I can get it.
Tiny movements on the volume control result in huge increases in volume.

Any ideas how to solve this without any reduction in
quality?
