If you're looking at precision then, for the price, you can't do better than Clearaudio Classic Wood. I have it fitted to my Xpression 1 and compared to a price-compatible Ortofon, it's a hefty upgrade. There's one currently one for sale on the Bay for £170. Normal RRP is £240.00.

Why not replace the stylus with an OM10 or one of the upgrades available from Jico or LPgear?
I had a look at the Pro-jects last weekend and heard the new one and the Debut III. They're certainly not bad, but I'd be a bit cautious about throwing too much money at them. The dealer made the point by demoing the same cartridge, an AT95E, in the Debut then in the Xpression, and there was a world of difference. The Debut sounded OK, if a bit noisy, but it was like a veil had been lifted from the sound when he switched to the Xpression.

Thanks for the replies........... think i'll go for the Ortofon 2M Red but i notice some of you have upgraded to the blue so i should probably go straight in for that one!!! Yep, follow the advice on the thread you've linked to - you need to get the set-up right before spending any additional money. If you still want to go ahead with upgrading the cartridge you'll need to make adjustments anyway, so either a bit of help from your friendly local dealer or have a look on the likes of Vinyl Engine if you want to do it yourself (it's not that difficult once you get your head around it).

Just to add some more info, my genie tends to skip and/or loop at various places across the vinyl from about a third of the way in.
I recently returned a copy of Bluesbreakers John Mayall. when the replacement arrived i played it on a Pioneer turntable. It played great.......got home played it on the genie, second track in and we're skipping and looping worse than before......so its got to be the turntable and not my collection of 20 or so new and used records surely?
Just to add some more info, my genie tends to skip and/or loop at various places across the vinyl from about a third of the way in.

i cant see how guys with years of knowhow can say get the 2m blue on a genie,i have heard the the nude elliptical stylus will show all the mistakes of the genie and that the tipped one on the 2m red is far better as it wont give much groove nosie.yes you will lose alot of detail and soundstage. i am very close to getting the 2m red myself willl have in the next 4 weeks, but would like you guys to defend yourselfs on the 2m blue choice.
Spot on - the 2M Red is a great upgrade choice for either the Genie or Debut turntables. Goldring 1042 might be going a little far as it costs about the same as the turntable, but this is of course one of the best moving magnets ever made at this level and would always give you somewhere to upgrade the turntable from in future if you decide to.
