I'm in the prosses of bying a Michell gyro se turntable but have no idea about cartriges. at the moment i'm using an ortofon om20 on a thorens td 166 mk2 which will not be anygood i would imagine.

I want to spend sub £200. Who are the contenders ????

Well the om20 would be fine for starters - you could upgrade the stylus one step at a time, they go reasonably high (up to a 40 if I remember).

Alternatively, the best I've heard on a gyro at that price are the Sumiko Blue Point Special and my mate's.......thinks.......well known for phono stages.........Tom Evans. That's the one. Don't know which model, will ask.

That's all I've heard specifically in the gyro - consider also Goldring, Ortofon 2M and Rega, depending on what you can find at a given dealer.

Have a look at the Denon range. Not usually known for their carts by most people, but they do very good, and very good value ones - some analogue enthusiasts consider them to be 'giant killers', especially the 103 and the 304.
