Can plasmas be laid flat?

not advisable when transporting them , the glass could shatter ...ok if you gently leave them down on their back , on a table or something so you can attach a stand .....but be careful....

if the glass cracks , your plasma is finished , thats the reason , the only one afaik.....

Unfortunately the glass is of sufficient surface area and relative thinness that even the act of putting the screen on its back, or lifting it up again, could create sufficient stress to crack it.

Well that's my curiosity satisfied, thanks folks. I shall be moving mine this weekend so wish me luck!

but ofcause some makers tell you that it is OK to lay them face down on a carpet or rug on a large flat surface so that you can attach any stand or mounting hardware.

The instructions for the KRP-WM02 wall-mount for my Kuro said:

Place the Pioneer display and television down on a sheet or similar material to protect it from scratches and damage.
Always place the Pioneer display and television on a stable surface such as a table.

So they said the same for the speakers...

Though I do agree with Andrew, if I was going to take down, move and store a plasma I'd advise making sure it was vertical and in the original packaging if available.

No it doesn't say it, but it includes a very pretty diagram showing it laid flat on a table - sorry not sure how to snap out of pdf and include in post...

Think it's probably okay (if not ideal) short term for fitting a base or whatever, but not for transporting any distance. Most plasma TVs still have some sort of surround that stands pround of the glass, so if you rest the TV on a sheet or blanket or whatever on a large enough surface, the TV will actually rest on the surround and not the glass.
