i am a complete novice when it comes to any technology, however i recognise a nice sound when it comes to music systems. we are looking for a system appropriate for a medium / large-ish lounge for evenings and parties. our heads were turned by the Bose wave systems but we are now not convinced and i was wondering what would happen if you paired the Denon D-M37DAB with the BOWERS & WILKINS 685 speakers? or is there a better suggestion for a maximum of £600? thanks, Nicki

Sadly, brilliant though the Denon is, it's just not up to powering the B&Ws. However, for £600 you could get the Denon system unit, upgrade speakers (think up to Monitor Audio BR2s) plus the speaker stands (£60 or so) and cables (Chord Carnival Silver Screen or QED Silver Anniversary at £6/m) that'll make the whole set-up sing.

Instead of Denon I will suggest Yamaha Pianocraft E-410 (Pixmania only - as not avalible in UK) and Usher 520 speakers... Highly recommended system in Europe...

i have not used such a service before. brilliant! thanks to you both for your advice - i shall look into them both.

Clare, Is it the Denon D-M50 Hi-Fi System that you were referring to?

also if i did want to stick to the speakers what would you suggest to pair with it? it i wanted to stick to the stereo would you pair the Tannoy speakers to it or something else?

I think Clare meant the D-M37 - the £600 figure was the total budget.

With the B&Ws I'd be looking at budget separates - Marantz or Rotel, maybe.

Yes, the Tannoys would work fine with the Denon unit, as would the Monitor Audios Clare suggested.

If you're after a decent volume for parties in a decent sized room then look at the systems packages on the Richer Sounds website.

They are relatively inexpensive and should provide a bit more umph than the micro system.
