Can anyone recommend a good film to show what Blu-Ray is all about?

Hi people.

First post here, though i've considered the website to be a mine of info for the past couple of years.

Right then, here's the thing.  My folks bought themselves a full HD Samsung LCD screen a few months ago.  Not sure of the model, but it's a current high 30-to-low-40 inch model with more HDMI inputs than I'd know what to do with (I'm still using a good Panasonic CRT with component and RGB SCART inputs!!).  My parents are of the opinion that having a HD screen is what it's all about, they've convinced themselves that normal low-def Sky TV, DVD and even VHS all look better on the Samsung, but I think that they're missing the point completely and that their supposedly stunning TV is going to waste.  This is a shame, because normal def on my CRT looks much better than it does on their full HD Samsung.

It's their 40th wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks, so I've bought them a Sony BDP S350 Blu-Ray player, together with a decent HDMI cable, a Blu-Ray copy of The Shawshank Redemption (cos it's a brilliant film) and a Blu-Ray copy of the BBC's Planet Earth documentary (saw it being played in the local Currys and was blown away by the detail) to go with their Samsung screen.

Bearing in mind that my folks have both recently turned 60, can anyone recommend another title that will help them understand what Blu-Ray and Hi-def in general are all about?

Cheers

G'day Kev, there are plenty of good Blu-Ray Discs out there, but just to mention two really good ones:

Die Hard 4.0

Batman Begins

Both showcase the stunning picture quality that Blu-Ray affords, but ESPECIALLY the audio. The uncompressed audio soundtracks (DTS-HD Master Audio for Die Hard 4.0, and Dolby TrueHD on Batman Begins) are absolutely brilliant.

Actually, come to think of it, add Spiderman 3 on to this list. It is superb, as well.

My parents are 60 and they loved No Country For Old Men (unbelievable film!!). The BD version is supposed to be brilliant. Usual Suspects, Godfather trilogy, Ratatouille is wonderful even if you are older.

"What do they like" is a difficult one to answer - the ol' dear has a passion for large scale biblical stuff (think Charlton Heston with flowing locks parting a sea somewhere), the ol' man is generally easier to please, but apart from Escape to Victory, I'm not really sure what he likes.

The Spiderman trilogy might be a goer - good-vs-evil for the ol' dear, eye candy in the form of Kirsten Dunst for the chief ;-)

Thanks for your suggestions -ÿyou'veÿall given me lots to think about. ÿas well as Spiderman, the old-school Bond films, DH4.0, Gladiator and I Am Legend could well fit the bill. ÿI've not seen No Country for Old Men yet (on the LoveFilm list).

Cheers

back in the day I was doing DVD work (well trying to make early interactive DVDs), so I got to see some DVD transfers in '99/2000 and vividly remember a reported comment from a German distributor that the DVD pressing of 5th element was better than his VHS master beta copy. So it is all about the transfer.

just thought that bit of history might amuse. 5th element is a fun film too, no idea what the blu-ray version is likeÿ

It simply has to be Kingdom of Heaven and/or Troy . Large scale , epic stuff . No Heston though.

But really , you already have the best one - Planet Earth .

Watch out for the forthcoming Gladiator , and of course Lord of the Rings .

The original version they did was pretty poor but they have since held their hands up and brought out a Remastered version which is very good quality. To be fair to Columbia they fully admitted the mistake and offered a free swap of anyone who bought the original with the new remastered version. This is all based on the US version mind - as it's a region free disc, I ordered it in.

For picture I can highly recommend Speedracer. However it does not have a HD audio track. But the picture quality is reference.

Try Happy Feet, a great family film. The grandkids will love it!

Not my usual type of film at all, am more a action film man, Troy,
Casino Royal, Kingdom of Heaven, Die Hard etc.

Picture definition, songs, soundtrack are as good as I have ever seen on Blue Ray.

So far for me it has to be No Country For Old Men- great opening lanscape shots at 1080i[even though recorded in 1080p]and the sound is absolutely awsome[especially the sniper chapters-its like someone is really shooting at my windows]-and this is on my ps3-totally,totally awsome!
