my first post in this section , im not too clued up on this hifi business , if i can give a scenario ..

im getting a pair of speakers this week , possibly floorstanders , or bookshelfs on stands , and im getting an av receiver , not sure which one yet ..

ill add sub , centre and sats later..

now i understand a proper hifi amp will give much better music playback than an av amp ? but ill have the speakers connected to the av amp , could i have a cd player , hooked up to a decent stereo audio amp , feeding through the av amp to the speakers ? so that the av amp is merely transporting the sound to the front speakers ?

Yes, but you've got it mixed up slightly - you pass a signal out from the AV receiver to the stereo amp, and it's to this that you connect the front two speakers. When you're playing CD (which is connected to the stereo amp), you don't have to have the AV amp on at all, so there's no passthrough. When you're playing AV, the preouts from the AV amp feed the stereo amp, which then feeds the speakers. Andrew linked an explanation of it earlier, I'll dig it out. EDIT - clicky

Note that this requires your AV amp to have preouts - and if I recall some of your options discussed on another thread don't have them...EDIT - the Denon and Onkyo don't, the Yamaha does, which if you plan to do this takes you down a particular path AV amp-wise.

ah thats brilliant jd thanks , i was wondering what preouts were , i was thinking that if im gonna have a decent pair of front speakers i may as well utilise them as best as possible for music , my av receiver will be one of the 1910 , rxv 765 or onkyo 607 , i think they have preouts , ill check anyway , cheers

somethink I asked before but got no answer.Speaker splitters used in reverse.one could connect 2 amps to a pair of speakers.I guess it would work.

ah , thats a possible problem , as im trying to buy some wharfedales , which are said to be "warm" , if so , i had figured the yamaha wouldnt suit , it being warm too , and was gonna get an onkyo ..

ill play it by ear , i wont know if ill have the wharfedales or missions till tmw or maybe even wednesday..

its just that i know ill be dragging out all my cds once i have a nice set of speakers , which will probably lead to me wanting a purer more musical sound from them , which will probably mean a few more posts in this section , then a cd player , happy for a while , then start thinking about a stereo amp , more posts etc etc ..

until one day im like a homing device for hifi shops like pp

Hi. I did this to my Onkyo 806 receiver and Marantz PM7003 stereo amp. I don't know about the new generation Onkyo but in the older models the pre-out starts in the 706 model. One thing beneficial about the Marantz PM7003 is that it has the "Power Amp Direct" button or the "bypass input" found in the Roksan Kandy K2.

It would also allow you to connect both amps to the speakers at the same time, and thus connect the output stages of the two together. That's absolutely not a good idea, and could lead to expensive damage.

ear:somethink I asked before but got no answer.

Given that this is about the 5th or 6th thread here asking exactly the same question in the last month, I think this should definitely be a sticky topic, should the new forum software permit such a thing.

The old forum software permits such a thing, but where's the fun in that?

It would stop the rest of us having to read, and answer the same questions over and over and would also stop people feeling left out when they don't get an answer because their question, unbeknownst to them, has already been asked and answered three times that week.

For example.

But I quite like answering them (and it's always worth reiterating, as in this example, that you need to buy a receiver with pre-outs)

the_lhc:It would tidy the place up as well, and save the mods having to merge threads, which would leave more time for hobnobs.

There is always time for hobnobs.

ok , ill put this one to bed then , ive been offered a pair of monitor audio bronze br5 floorstanders , and an onkyo 607 , for the very very good price of e750 with a 3 year warranty on the amp , not sure about the speakers , no preouts on that amp as jd kindly told me , but that might be a good thing , in blocking some potentially expensive hifi shenanigans down the road

oh no , do i not like that hmmm

ok , whats warm , whats bright , what should i change

Well I may be being unfair to MA since I haven't heard the BR5s and the review here suggests not, but I've always found their metal-dome tweeters a bit, um, excitable. Which also happens to be Onkyo's middle name.

thanks jd , been back on the blower , the helpful guy in munstersounds agreed that a yamaha would be better , he will do the monitors and a rxv765 for e800 , the other very helpful man in sevenoaks agreed too , he reckoned the denon 1910 and monitors was a match made in heaven , but e850 (still a great price) is beyond me ..

the 565 is cheaper , i dont want to skimp on the amp though , although im sure i would not even notice ..
