Camille Saint-Saens symphony no.3

Hello,

I have a few versions of this work and my favourite and the one I always go back to is the Eugene Ormandy reading of this piece with the Philidelphia Orchestra.....

My favourite is Barenboim with the Chicage SO with the organ from Chatres Cathedral on DG.

Chris

Completely agree. Fabulous recording.

+ 1

I also have an early Telarc recording that shakes the windows, but is a bit flabby as a performance. I recall an ASV disc made in Guildford cathedral with the RPO I think, which I only mention because I heard it live there too.

I bought the Barenboim Chicago version when it came out on LP and played it constantly. It's a great performance and a very good recording. Interestingly, Gaston Litaize overdubbed the organ part in Chartres Cathedral without the orchestra being present. In the classical world and in the days of analogue recording, this was a pretty radical thing to do.

Try the RCA Living Stereo one - Boston SO / Munch. Old recording, and quite a bit of tape hiss. But oh what a sound, and the performance is spot on.

Yep, another fine recording. I've got this in the Living Stereo box set - well worth picking up if you want to suddenly acquire a whole load of wonderful recordings (60 CDs).

My current favourite is a live recording on the Ondine Label (ODE 1094-5) with Oliver Latry and the Philadelphia Orchestra (it’s a hybrid SACD) and it’s partnered with the Poulenc Organ Concerto and Barber’s ‘Toccata Festiva’.

Whilst we’re on the subject of organ and orchestra could I persuade people to seek out (if they like this sort of thing):

‘Fantaisie Triomphale’ - Chandos CHSA 5048 - also a hybrid SACD

Symphony in G Minor (Dupre) / Organ Concerto No.1 in F (Rheinberger) (Telarc CD-80136)

Poulenc / Widor (with THE toccata) / Guilmant ‘Symphony No.1’ (Chandos CHAN 9271)

Dupré ‘Complete Music for Organ and Orchestra (Works for Organ Vol.3)’ (Naxos 8.553922)

Both Chandos discs feature Ian Tracey on the fabulous organ in Liverpool Cathedral.

Guild records have a number of discs with organ and orchestra some of which I have not listened to for a long time but seem to remember have some unfamiliar but worthy content.

I also have several recordings of the ‘Symphonie Concertante’ by Joseph Jongen which is a real barnstormer, but again haven’t listened to them for some time so feel unable to recommend a particular recording.

This is stuff you’ll never hear on Classic FM, is tuneful, approachable and not really widely known except by organ bores like me, which is a shame.

Thanks for the suggestions in this thread.

I went with the DG Barenboim version and have been listening for the last week or so, i like it very much. I'm currently listening to it through my STAX, you cant beat electrostatics for classical IMO.
