Cambridge Audio Melomania P100

Damn, 3/5 seems a bit mean, I bought these a few weeks ago after previously owning XM3 & 4s & I haven't looked back. The sound is so much richer and detailed than my XM4's, I'm hearing fresh details in every track that I've never heard before each time I listen to an old favourite and I've been loving them more each day. Also missing in this review is the selling point that Cambridge Audio sell user replaceable batteries (and earpads) which seriously adds to the longevity of the product compared to all the competitors.

Sony in particular is amongst the worst for offering no official spare parts, it's practically impossible to get reasonably priced official earpad replacements in most countries for Sony ANC headphones. It's a disgusting example of planned obsolescence from these giant corporate behemoths trying to railroad the customer into buying a whole new pair of expensive headphones rather than spending some spare change making the old product last. I much prefer Cambridge Audio's approach to sustainability and not trying to shaft the customer.

Imagine thinking Sony headphones have a better sound compared to these. The author clearly has no idea about sound quality. This site is what Hi fi ; I guess they struggle to understand hi fi sound 😹

Its shows reviews can be influenced by subjectiveness or maybe a commitment by rival companies to advertise in magazines as long as they favour brands. The reality Is i have listened to these in richers sounds and £1 for £1 I found them excellent. No leakage like the overrated Sony xm5 which is never mentioned. And lots of 5 star reviews elsewhere. ..🤔🤔🤔

Do not make accusations of payola without proof please.

I own both the Melomania P100 and the Sony WH-1000XM5, and I absolutely do not agree with the review. In my experience, the P100s offer more clarity and presence compared to the XM5s, with a noticeable difference.

Depending on the genre, that 'presence' can be quite substantial. For example, when listening to David Sanborn – Run for Cover (Live) or Bobby Womack – If You Think You're Lonely Now, the P100s perform above and beyond the XM5s. The sound is much, much warmer, and the presence is amazing. I understand that headphone reviews can be very subjective, but sometimes the difference is so clear that it shouldn't be.

All I'm saying is, if you can, try them out—try both if possible.

Last Tuesday, almost a week ago now, I bought a pair of P100s. I needed a pair of wireless cans to listen to French radio while out walking along country lanes, and removing the noise of passing cars is essential. My Bose QC25 did the job, but the cable was annoying, getting caught on something at any opportunity, and the sound is so so as lower frequencies are exaggerated and mushy. After reading reviews, and looking at frequency response plots, I narrowed down my shortlist to the P100.

Anyway, the P100s are impressive. The sound is clear and very neutral. I rejected most wireless cans as they come with non replaceable batteries, which means that after ~500 recharges they have to be thrown away. As said earlier, the P100s have a replaceable battery and ear pads. And the battery life is an incredible 60 hours. Every time you recharge the battery, it shortens the life, so the fewer recharges, the better.

Did the review mention the graphic equaliser? Unlike Bose and B&W, and maybe everyone else, it has seven bands. Bose and B&W have three. That means that I can adjust the frequencies to match my hearing. I’m 61, and a typical 60 year old loses many dB in the higher frequencies, and even neutral cans will sound bass heavy. So I created a preset that slopes upwards with frequency. Another advantage is that the P100 has a neutral sound, whereas Bose, B&W and Sony have exaggerated bass. I’ve listened to their cans and I can’t stand them. Even the B&W Px8 has a consumer grade bass heavy sound signature. Oh, and my iPhone does not have its own equaliser, unless I pay an absurd yearly fee for a third party one.

This evening I’ve listened to Sibelius, John Coltrane, Aphex Twin and Motorhead. These cans are the mutts. I knew I’d like them when I saw that WH gave them three stars.

FWIW my other cans include Sennheiser HD600 (superb), Senheiser IE200 (annoying cable), Audeze Sine (beautiful sound, very poor build quality) and Bose QC25 (excellent noise reduction and build, mediocre sound quality).

Probably the only review I've read that gives the P100 the thumbs down!

I have QC35 II, XM5, and recently bought the P100. The Cambridge Audio P100 is cheaper and in my opinion for SURE sounds better than Bose and Sony!

The others have exaggerated bass, the P100 have natural bass. What HiFi reviews are subjectivity dressed up as fact.

In your review you end with...
"if it were our money, we would spend it on one of those excellent rivals rather than on the Melomania P10"
What they actually mean is 'We'd prefer it if you spent your hard earned money on a pair of earphones we've massively over hyped recently, a pair of headphones from a manufacturer who spends far more on advertising than the average joe'.
Rubbish review for a pair of cans that sound so much better your review suggests.
